What’s your style when it comes to a backyard celebration? Most of the time I go for a pair of denim shorts and a cute top, but a comfortable dress is another great option! However you like to celebrate, I’ve rounded up seven different outfits that are all petite friendly!
Eight Outfits For a Backyard BBQ
Denim Shorts
Denim shorts are my favorite thing to wear in the summer, especially if they’re comfortable. Comfortable to me means a nice longer length, and no ride up in the back – I can’t stand that! I’ve had a lot of luck with this pair and this pair from Old Navy, they hit all the marks in terms of fit and comfort. I wear both pairs in a size 0 and find them to be true to size.
With a Boho Top
This boho top is a recent LOFT find. It has a shorter length that a taller gal may find uncomfortable, but if you’re shorter like me – it’s great! I’m wearing it in petite XXS and it also had coverage in the arm holes you no bra show through.

With a Sweater Tank Top
This sweater isn’t the cutest online, but in person it’s so pretty! It’s technically a “sweater” but not hot and thick like you might think. Definitely a summer weight. I’m wearing it in Petite XXS.

With a Swing Tank
Tops with a little swing at the bottom are forgiving and floaty and look great tucked and untucked. This one from Target is a good fit for Petites. The armholes are a little low and I wear a cami under it.

With Pull-On Shorts
Pull on shorts are also really comfortable and light. This first pair comes in petite so the proportions are great! It comes in several different colors, I’m wearing them in Petite XXS. I personally think drawstring style shorts look the best with a top that’s tucked in because they’re voluminous at the top and can add weight to your middle if you don’t show the waistband. Another option is to wear a shorter top with them which has the same idea as tucking it in. You could also add a denim jacket to either of these outfits!

Striped Shorts
This pair of shorts doesn’t come in petite, so they’re a little longer and have a little more room overall. They’re a linen blend that’s light, but holds it’s shape and isn’t incredibly wrinkly like some linen options.

T-Shirt Dress
A t-shirt dress is a great casual option for summer, whether that’s a day out, running errands or a backyard bbq. I’ve found a few lately that fit petites really well! This striped one is an option I shared in my capsule wardrobe post, but Old navy recently put out a few that fit well also. I put on sneakers with the dress here, when it comes to wearing sneakers with a dress when you’re petite, I think it looks best and less heavy if your skirt or dress hit mid-thigh and definitely above the knee.

Old Navy T-Shirt Dress
This is the Old Navy dress I mentioned above. It comes in this ombre style in pink and blue, but there are also solid versions. I’ll be sharing the solid version in an upcoming post, along with several other great Old Navy finds I bought recently for summer! I’ve been really impressed with them and can’t wait to share. I’m wearing the dress in Petite XS and it fits well. It does have longer armholes, that you’ll need a cami under or it will show your bra. It would also be great over a bathing suit.

Tiered Dress
Since this post is about a backyard celebration I’m including a dressier option just in case your occasion calls for it. This tiered midi dress is fully lined, has pockets, and is roomy and comfortable. I styled it with sandals here to give it a more casual vibe, but it would also look great with wedges!
