I’ll never forget when I started taking my skincare seriously. I think I was around 24 – 25, and I was getting a facial. I thought my skin was the bomb, which according to the esthetician, it was pretty good – but I was missing out on a few things that would improve the overall appearance of my skin, and help with a few problem areas. What I was missing out on, was exfoliation.
Why I Love Exfoliating My Skin
I started with a scrub and an eye cream with glycolic acid in it, and the difference was night and day. My skin was brighter, I had less blemishes, and the teeny tiny bumps under my eyes started to drop in number. Girlfriend knew what she was talking about. The basis of exfoliation is removing the top layer of your skin, which promotes cell turnover and reveals brighter skin. Our bodies naturally shed skin, exfoliation just boosts that process. However, with all good things – there is balance. Too much exfoliation, or using the wrong products, and you’ve got yourself a problem. Your skin can dry out, become more sensitive, and be more susceptible to sun damage. Balance is key. Over the years, I’ve tried many products, many routines and have come to find a routine and products that I love.
What Products Do I Use?
For this post, I’m going to focus on the products I use on my face. I use other products on my body. I have keratosis pilaris on the backs of my thighs and arms, so exfoliation on my body is just as important there (more on that in another post). On my face I use two different products to exfoliate; a scrub and a serum.
Skin Resource.MD Age-Limit™ Advanced Refinishing Serum
The first time I tried this serum, I was wowed. The results were immediate. My skin instantly looked brighter, and smoother. What makes it great? The blend of glycolic acid, arginine, and soothing plant extracts. You get the exfoliating process of glycolic acid, with little to no irritation, thanks to those plant extracts. I do have a tiny bit of stinging with this product, but it’s very minimal and not at all a big deal. The results are worth it. I use this product once a day or every other day, after cleansing with a gentle Total Facial Cleansing Gel.
Skin Resource.MD Crystal Clarity Exfoliating Scrub
I keep this scrub in the shower and use it a few times a week. This scrub is gentle, and effective. The thing I really love about the scrub is how fine the grain is. There are many exfoliating scrubs on the market that are way too coarse for your face, and really do more damage than good. This scrub is so fine and light, perfect for the skin on your face.
What Do I Use With My Exfoliating Products?
My skin tends to be fairly dry, and sensitive, especially as we get into the cooler months. So, I’m careful to not over exfoliate my skin, and I always follow up with a lot of moisturizing and protecting products. I will use these exfoliating products with my morning routine, because I like the brightness it will give my skin that day. So, after cleansing and exfoliating, I spray my face with visibly moist toner, then apply an oil-free facial moisturizer. I finish up by applying hyaluronic, tinted facial sunscreen. Using SPF with a regular exfoliating routine is so important, as your skin is more susceptible to sun damage.
In the evening I will use more creams and serums. You can read more about my skincare routine here and here.
What you exfoliate with and how often you exfoliate will depend on your skin type, and what works best for you! I personally love these two products! Do you exfoliate your skin? What products do you use?
