My makeup routine has become a little rushed. My beauty routine in general has become rushed, which is part of the reason I chopped most of my hair off. I need quick, but I still want to look put together. I’m not one to wear a ton of lipstick, however, since I tend to only have time for a little mascara most days, I’ve come to find the power of a little lip color too. So, I’ve been on the hunt, for the perfect shades and the perfect brands. Since I can’t fully commit to daily lip color, I started with drugstore brands. That way, I’m not out of a ton of money if I either don’t like them, or don’t wear them enough. After consulting with Google and trying out the so called “best of the best” I’ve come up with my own opinion about these top ranking drugstore matte lipsticks.
The Best Drugstore Matte Lipstick
Best Overall Feel: Milani Color Statement Lipstick
Although this formula isn’t the longest lasting, it has the best overall feel. The scent reminds me of a light caramel, that isn’t terribly overpowering, and the finish is light and powdery. My lips never feel wet or sticky, and overall the color lasts for a few hours (if there is no eating or drinking involved). The shade I’m wearing is 61 Matte Velvet, and I personally really love it with my skin tone. This one is $5.99 at Target.
Longest Wear: Maybelline Super Stay Matte Ink
This formula is easy to apply, and lasts for hours, even through eating and drinking. I don’t care for the smell, it’s an overly vanilla scent, but it does fade quickly. The lip color dries quickly to a somewhat powdery finish. I say somewhat because it does stay a tiny bit sticky if you mush your lips together. However, I can get over the stickiness, because the wear is incredible. This one does not get on your teeth and doesn’t fade for hours. The shade I’m wearing is 15 Lover. This one is $7.99 at Target.
Favorite Color: Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolor
It was hard for me to pick my favorite shade of the brands I tried. Honestly Revlon in Seduction was neck and neck with Milani in Matte Naked. However, as much as I loved the color, I wouldn’t consider this one a true matte, but more of a satin finish. The formula smells very sweet and vanilla, a little too strong for my tastes, and stays slick on your lips like a lipgloss. The formula doesn’t have a lot of staying power either. The shade I’m wearing is Seduction. This one is $5.99 at Target.
The Skip List: NYX Velvet Matte & Rimmel Stay Matte
I told you I consulted Google before going on this trying spree – and there were two brands that are on top lists, that didn’t deliver. NYX Velvet Matte, is just so-so. It smells a little like a crayon and is also dry enough to be a crayon. It fades quickly, although the shade I tried, Soft Femme, is a pretty color.
My very least favorite of every one I tried is Rimmel Stay Matte Liquid Lip Color. The photo actually does this formula more justice than it deserves. It quickly dries from a soft pink to a strange reddish orange, and dehydrates my lips. The review I read online about this brand, is that they make great name brand dupes. Not so sure about that one.
What Should You Buy?
If you want lasting color, go for Maybelline Super Stay Matte Ink. If you want a nice feel, with a pretty non-drying matte finish, go for Milani Color Statement Lipstick.
Have you tried any of these brands? Do you have a favorite matte lipstick?
