Water, Water, Everywhere: Tips for Staying Hydrated.
By: Erica Wells, RD
The body is largely made up of water, so it is no surprise to hear that taking care to maintain adequate hydration is super important, particularly when you are having increased losses through sweat during exercise or warm summer months. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day is your first line of defense towards consuming at least 8 cups of water per day.
Choosing foods high in water content can help you meet your fluid needs more easily. Fruits and vegetables contain a large amount of water. Some of those with the highest fluid content are: watermelon, cantaloupe, grapefruit, oranges, peaches, pears, pineapple, cucumber, celery, tomatoes, crisp lettuces, broccoli, squash and zucchini. Of course the list expands beyond fruits and vegetables as soup, gelatin, popsicles also contain high amounts of water which contribute to your daily intake. To note, any fluid counts towards your daily fluid goals, however water is always your best option as it is pure and calorie free. While caffeine containing beverages like coffee or tea count, the caffeine in these beverages act as a diuretic which actually increases fluid loss from the body, therefore you may need to drink even more fluid over the course of a day to compensate.
What is the best way to tell if you are hydrated? If your urine is mostly colorless, you are good to go.
Drink (and eat) up!
