A denim jacket has been a go-to layer for me since I was a teenager. I will wear one through all seasons, but I mostly wear one during the spring and summer. It’s a great layer to add to dresses, skirts and shorts for those temperature fluctuations during the spring and indoor/outdoor settings in the summer.
You’ll see some things come and go when it comes to a denim jacket. Such as an oversized fit (like we’re seeing now), embellishments, distressing, and wash. However, a classic fit in a mid or dark wash, like the one in this post, is one I personally think never goes out of style.

Four Ways to Wear a Denim Jacket
My Sizing: I’m 4’10” and my bust, waist, and hip measurements are 32″, 24″ and 36″. My typical inseam is 25″. The clothes shown are unaltered and show how they fit me right from the store. I list my sizing beside each item to help you compare when shopping online.
A denim jacket is versatile enough to wear with just about anything. You can wear it with dresses, skirts, pants, and shorts. You can wear a denim jacket with jeans as well, but personally, I prefer them with bottoms that will contrast. As far as fit, I find if the jacket hits at your hip and fits well through the shoulders it will be the most flattering on someone who is petite. I often cuff the sleeves on my denim jacket, because showing a little skin at the wrists always helps make you look a little longer and taller. The jacket I’m wearing in this post is one of my favorites to wear. It is true to size, with light stretch.
With a Skirt
I love this outfit without the jacket, but in cases where you may need an extra layer, I think it’s a great option. In this outfit, the skirt fits me well in my true size. It’s fully lined with a zipper closure, which gives it a smoother fit up top. The top runs a little bit large, I’m wearing it in Petite XXS, but I find I have a little extra room around the straps.

With a Dress
The sneakers and dresses trend is still going strong and I couldn’t be happier. I love to add a denim jacket whenever I’m pairing sneakers with a dress or skirt to help dress down the overall outfit. The dress in this outfit is not lined, but the fabric isn’t sheer. It is roomy on me in my true size, Petite XXS, so you may want to go down a size.

With White Jeans
This outfit combination is one of my defaults; white jeans, colored top, denim jacket – good to go. The jeans in this outfit are true to size. They are stretchy with a mid-rise. The top is also true to size and I’m wearing it in Petite XXS.

With Shorts
Although I opted for a pair of white eyelet shorts, any shorts that aren’t blue denim are a go-to choice for me with a denim jacket. Black and white denim shorts are also fair game. The shorts in this outfit are lined, but still a tiny bit sheer. They have an elastic back and a slightly oversized fit, so you may want to go down a size. The top fits me well in Petite XXS, it has a wide dolman fit.
