A trench coat is a true classic and one thing I’ve had in my closet since high school (in case you’re wondering that’s the early 2000s for me). It’s one of those finishing pieces that elevates any outfit. While the trendiest options at the moment are long and a little oversized, I love the coat from J.Crew, in this post, which has a close fit and is knee-length on me. I bought this coat two years ago now and it’s a timeless style I intend to keep for many years, so I was more than happy to invest in it. However, I’m currently looking for other options at different price points to recommend. So far, I’ve had a hard time finding a great petite fit in other options due to the oversized trend, they have just swallowed me up.

Four Outfit Ideas with a Trench Coat
My Sizing: I’m 4’10” and my bust, waist, and hip measurements are 32″, 24″ and 36″. My typical inseam is 24-25″. The clothes shown are unaltered and show how they fit me right from the store. I list my sizing beside each item to help you compare when shopping online.
J.Crew Icon Trench Coat
Let’s dive deep into the fit and highlights of the J.Crew coat in this post. First, this coat does go on sale from time to time, so you can grab it at a lower price. The coat is very well-made, fully lined, and has a detachable hood. It comes in other colors as well – I recently ordered it in navy. I’m wearing it in Petite 00 which is my typical size for J.Crew coats. Since it has a classic fit and isn’t oversized, it’s a timeless piece you’ll wear for years.
With Wide Leg Jeans
Since my coat fits me well, it’s a nice balance with wide-leg jeans. I opted for a pair of winter white jeans, but you can swap in blue or black instead if white isn’t your favorite. My jeans are the 90s Relaxed Jeans from Abercrombie in “bone with raw hem”. I’m wearing them in 24 short here for a little extra length with heels. These jeans also come in extra short.

With Leggings
Pairing a trench coat with leggings is a great way to strike an elevated casual balance. My favorite pair of leggings is this pair from Aerie, they’re a perfect length in short. I snagged these socks off of Amazon which are a great fit for small feet. The sneakers – let me tell you about the sneakers. I knew I loved them, but I wore them to Disney last week where I walked a total of roughly nine miles a day for six days straight (and stood for hours on end) and my feet were never sore – not once. We visit Disney typically once a year and I’ve worn many different kinds of shoes over the years, but after wearing this pair, I don’t think I’ll wear anything else.

With Straight Jeans
Here’s another idea with a pair of jeans. I love these slim straight jeans from J.Crew Factory but any style of denim would work well in this outfit (wide leg, flare, cropped, etc). My jeans have sold out in petite, unfortunately, but you might like some of the other petite options from J.Crew factory I reviewed in this post. My shoes in this outfit are a winning find from Target. While I tend to love Target’s heels and sandals, most of the flats I’ve tried have been uncomfortable, but this pair doesn’t disappoint. They’re well-padded and fit me well. I’m a size five and often find their size five flats to run large, but this pair is true to size.

To Work
A trench coat is a polished and professional layer that’s great for adding to any work outfit. I often wear my coat open, but it’s beautiful fully buttoned and belted.
