Keeping it professional: a lesson in job seeking

IMG_2819

Good morning! Today’s post is going to be directed for anyone who may be entering the work force for the first time or seeking a career change. A little off topic, but keeping with a somewhat personal development theme. This information may be old news for some, but for many, it may be the guide you need to make a great first impression.

First I will share with you my outfit, which for reference is not interview friendly.

I work in a management level position in charge of recruitment. It is a small company, so we do not hire frequently. However, when we do, I am shocked at the myriad of simple interview mistakes people make. Not at any fault of their own, I truly feel they have not been properly trained on how to dress and conduct themselves.

I will focus more on your appearance for an interview, because well this is a fashion and fitness blog. My outfits that I post, work for my office and our culture from the day to day. However, if I was going for an interview, my appearance would be totally different.

It should be a given, but no jeans, no shorts, no short skirts. You would be surprised the interviewees I see show up in a casual short dress. In my opinion it shouldnt matter if you’re applying for an entry level position or a position you wouldn’t typically wear a suit for, in an interview, a jacket is a must.

Keep it simple, a simple black pencil skirt, plain button down and a blazer should do the trick. An interview is not the time to break out your favorite statement necklace or fabulous pumps. You want your skills as a professional to come across in your interview, not your awesome taste in accessories.

Watch you perfume. Many people are sensitive to smells or have allergies to perfume. If you show up smelling like, well ‘a french whore’ you could turn your interviewer off immediately.

Your hair should be simple. Neatly pulled back from your face, is a standard recommendation. However, if you’re not one to pull your hair back, keep it neat and tucked behind your ears, so they can see your face.

Get a manicure and keep the color light and neutral. You would be surprised how many people take note of a someone’s hands. This would be a downfall for me, because I am a terrible nail biter. But for an interview, I would totally fake that I am tedious enough to keep my nails in tip top shape and not a nervous nail biter.

Your shoes, should be simple and clean. Try not to show up in your favorite broken in pumps.

Your goal when going for an interview is to portray that you are serious enough and have enough respect for the company to overdress rather than under dress. You may show up and they will be very impressed with your appearance or they may say, we don’t normally wear jackets around here. However, they will remember you. When I sent my husband off for an interview at a very competitive company, one they typically do not wear jackets and ties, he was the only one who showed up in a jacket. They picked him.

I hope this information helps you if you have an upcoming interview!

love, Brooke
