Longer shorts are trending this season – and we all said AMEN! Being blessed with short legs, I’ve always appreciated short shorts for the ability to make my legs look a little longer. However, the older I get, the less I feel like worrying about what might pop out of a pair of short shorts. A 3″ inseam seems to be my sweet spot, but I wanted to give the longer inseam shorts a try. I’ve tried bermuda shorts as well as 5″ inseam shorts and they just didn’t suit my shape and leg length. Now, let me say – I’m not saying Petites can’t wear those lengths, I’m just saying I don’t like them on me. I did find that a 4″ inseam works well for me, and I’m really starting to think I like them even more than my tried and true 3″ inseam.

Ways to Wear 4″ Inseam Shorts
Sizing reference: I’m 4’10” and around 105lbs.
Today I’m styling a pair of shorts I picked up from J.Crew that has a little extra length, and room overall for a comfortable modern fit. I would say these shorts run large in general, I’m wearing them in a size 24 and they’re roomy all over – but I find that to be comfortable. If you want a closer fit, you may want to size down. I’m sharing the white pair today, but I also have this style in blue denim and love them.
With Heels
One plus of a longer pair of shorts is the ability to wear them with heels. I don’t love the combination of heels and a pair of short shorts, but a longer pair keeps it classy. I’m wearing this olive top in regular XXS and it fits well, no armhole gaping and the length hits me at the hip.

Layered
One of my go-to summer outfits is a tank top layered with a light button-down. It’s a classic I’ve loved for years and one I’m seeing more and more of this season. I’m currently working on a summer capsule wardrobe post and everything in this outfit is in it!

Cropped Sweatshirt
Longer inseam shorts can make you look a little wide if you don’t highlight your waist or the rise of the bottoms. I front tucked most of the outfits in this post, but a cropped top accomplishes the same thing. I don’t love a belly-baring cropped top, but this sweatshirt that hits right at the hip is perfect for me.

With a Blouse
Summer outfits are truly my favorite. I just love how easy it is to mix a dressed-up top with a pair of laid-back sandals and go to dinner. This top is light so you can still wear it as the weather heats up.
