I’m back with another post in the Fall Boots series. This time I’m styling what I would consider a go-to pick for an elevated casual outfit. I say elevated not because I think these outfits are dressy, but when I think of something fully casual I think of sneakers or flat chelsea boots (you’ll see those in another post).
In this post, I focused specifically on how these boots pair with the different styles of denim that I’m personally wearing this season. I get the most questions about pairing boots with jeans so I’m hoping I can help you with some combinations that may work for you too.

Fall Boots Series: Neutral Boots
My Sizing: I’m 4’10” and my bust, waist, and hip measurements are 32″, 24″ and 36″. My typical inseam is 24-25″. The clothes shown are unaltered and show how they fit me right from the store. I list my sizing beside each item to help you compare when shopping online.
Neutral Fall Boots
First, the boots. There are numerous options when it comes to boots and it may mostly depend on your personal style and comfort needs when you pick a pair for you. Here’s what I look for in a pair of casual boots:
- A pointed or square toe.
- A slim tall shaft without any cut-outs that tucks under different styles of pants and jeans. Choosing a pair that fits closely to your ankle will keep your ankles/legs from looking heavier under the jeans.
- I wear a lot of light colors so I personally prefer boots that are tan or light brown. From a petite styling point of view, light neutral shoes in any style will lengthen your legs so I tend to go that route. Darker shoes can still work if you keep the contrast from the boots to the jeans/pants low, for example, dark wash or black jeans with black or dark brown boots.
- Although they aren’t the most comfortable, I prefer a higher (3″) heel for the length they give with a pair of jeans, but I will also share an option with a lower heel.
My favorite pick for this season is the pair I’m wearing in this post from Marc Fisher. They are true to size and overall walkable (not for extended periods of time). I recommend protecting these with a suede protector. If you’re looking for an option with a lower heel, you may like this pair. This pair is waterproof and this pair is less expensive.
Jeans – What Are We Wearing?
The answer – whatever you like really! Of course, the biggest trend is moving away from skinny jeans. I still love mine and they’ll be back on everyone before you know it, but I did not include them in this post. If you want to see outfits with skinny jeans and boots, check out this previous winter capsule post. We used to meet the top of the boots to the hem of a pair of skinny jeans, but with the trending denim styles this season, we’re tucking the boots under. So, you’ll want to choose a pair of jeans that is long enough to cover the top of your boots. Here are a few examples below: I kept these outfits simple so you could really see the jeans and the boots together.

I would also wear these boots with wide-leg jeans, I just didn’t have a pair that was long enough to picture for the post. I love this pair from Abercrombie, in extra short they’re a great length for flats, but I would go for short to wear them with boots.
You can find outfits for work with boots here. Stay tuned for chelsea boots and knee-high boots!
