Here in Virginia, the kind of fireworks that are legal, are small, stay low to the ground and all emit the same kind of white fountain of sparks. This past weekend, we started celebrating a little early for the good ol’ US of A, which of course included lighting a few of these little fireworks. We’ve lit these little fireworks for years, it’s always fun, and feels relatively safe. Despite all of my convincing, my youngest is terrified of them. I did lots of reassuring to him this year that it would be just fine, that they were just pretty to look at it and wouldn’t hurt him. Then we lit the small firework, that ended up malfunctioning and fully cemented his fear of fireworks…for years maybe.
After lighting it off, it started with a small strange explosion which made us all go ummm something isn’t quite right with this firework. So we started to get up and move the kids back slowly, but not really in a panic yet. Then the firework started letting off more little explosions and turned toward us and that’s when we landed in the line of fire. Erica and I started yelling RUN!! With three kids in tow, we were running and ducking for cover like a Rambo movie. To make a long story short, no one was hurt and Erica and I were full blown dramatic, while everyone else was kind of calm about it. Except the littlest, he was in a full panic. It made for a funny story, and made me realize how even those little tiny legal fireworks, aren’t necessarily all that safe! We ended up watching the rest a little on edge. (The littlest ended up watching the rest from inside!)

We’re going to spend today by the pool, and will leave the fireworks to the professionals this time. I hope you have fun today, celebrating in red, white and blue! Happy Independence Day!
