Petite-Friendly Coats

It’s coat season! I’ve always been a little bit of an “over buyer” when it comes to coats. One, I’m always cold – so I love a good cozy coat, but I also love the way they complete an outfit. Over the years I’ve built a collection of coats and the best part is, many in this post are classics that will last in your closet for years to come. Bonus – they’re all petite friendly.

J.Crew Chateau Parka

Last year when I wrote about coats, this one was definitely included. J.Crew has sold this coat for years and I personally own it now in three colors. Not necessary of course, but I just love it so much and love all of the colors that are offered. I have it in gray, green and this year I bought this camel version.

Fit & Warmth

I wear almost all J.Crew coats in Petite 0. Their smallest size (00P/XXSP) runs really small, which is great for more sizing possibilities! The sleeves fit me well in petite, hitting right at my wrist. The coat bells out slightly at the bottom and the fur around the hood is detachable. This coat is medium warmth in my opinion. It’s lined and the hood is a nice touch, but the next coat I’m sharing is warmer.

Cost

J.Crew coats are expensive, there’s no denying that. However. they run awesome sales on them through the holiday season. If you aren’t in need of a coat right away, they’re also marked down significantly after the holidays. I’ll be keeping an eye on the holiday sales and will share them to stories as I see them. Overall you can expect to snag this coat from $180-$280, full price is $375.

Less Expensive Option

J.Crew Factory makes a similar coat called the Vail Parka. It looks similar and also comes in petite. I haven’t tried that coat myself, but I have tried the “city coat” from factory. They’re still nice coats, but if you compare them to the J.Crew version, there is a quality difference.

I wrote about the Chateau Parka last year too.

J.Crew Lodge Coat

This coat is new to me this year and I can tell it’s going to be on heavy rotation. As many coats as I have, I have was lacking a black one. This coat is very warm and heavily lined. It also has cuffed inner sleeves and a soft inner layer to the collar to keep it from being itchy on your neck. It doesn’t have a hood.

Fit and Warmth

This coat has a straight cut and fits slimmer than the Chateau Parka. I wear it in 0P and the sleeve length is perfect. It is the warmest of all of my wool coats.

Cost

My sale tips from above hold true to this coat as well. Full price is $375, but on sale you can snag it from around $180 – $280. That’s just a general range, the lowest I’ve ever found a J.Crew coat is 50% off and I was able to stack a cardholder code (during a cardholder appreciation month) on top for an extra 20% off.

Less Expensive Option

The J.Crew Factory City Coat is very similar in style to the Lodge Coat. It’s not as warm, but it does come in petite so you shouldn’t have any fit issues there. If you want to see it styled, I wore it in this post from a few years ago.

J.Crew Topcoat

The topcoat is a great outfit finisher. It’s a lighter coat that does have some warmth to it, but don’t expect it to give off major warmth. It fits me well and I appreciate that I can pull off some of the trendier outfits with this petite-friendly outfit. It’s fully lined and beautifully made.

Fit and Warmth

This coat is lighter and not as warm as the other two options. It will keep you warm, but probably not in 30 degree weather. It fits a little larger than the other coats as well. I wear it in 00P.

Cost

This coat has sell out potential before the season is over, but it will also go on sale like the other two.

Less Expensive Option

I recently found an Amazon coat that fits similar to the J.Crew Topcoat. It’s lighter, but it is lined. Be prepared to steam it when it comes in the mail, but it’s a great affordable option.

Amazon Essentials Puffer Coat

I first found this coat last year when I wrote about Amazon Activewear. I originally bought a orange/brown color and ultimately decided to exchange it for black. This $50 coat is so warm and is just all around a great winter coat purchase.

Fit and Warmth

This jacket fits true to size and I wear it in XS. It has a little extra room, but I appreciate that so I can layer bigger sweaters under it. It has thumb loops in the sleeves to bring them down over your hands and make it easy to tuck gloves into in snowy weather.

Nine West Teddy Coat

I included a teddy coat that I found at Kohls in my Reel and then realized it has mostly sold out unfortunately. I’m wearing that coat in XS and appreciated that it was an inexpensive way to wear a trendier style. Although that coat is sold out currently, I think there are great things to be found at Kohls. I recently found out they carry some petites and am planning a post with a few things I found!

I included a few options so you would have things to choose from, but I don’t think you need one of each. Instead I would choose the one that fits your lifestyle the best. If you need a coat that’s mostly casual, I would choose the Chateau Parka. If you want a coat to dress up and down and prefer a slimmer fit, I would choose the Lodge Coat. The topcoat is great to have if you need to dress up often for work and the Amazon Puffer is an affordable option if you encounter a lot of snow and wet winter weather.

Either way, I hope you find a coat you love this year!
