My favorite fashion item for fall and winter is a coat. Obviously we need coats for warmth, but the way they elevate an outfit is my favorite. I’ll be sharing puffer coats for cold weather in future posts but for this first series I’m focusing on dressy coats. I’ve rounded up several options for you to choose from and will be separating them into two posts based on price. I went with different color options and styles to give some variety so you can choose the best one for your style. In the first post, the coats are all under $150. If they pop up over $150, wait for a sale because they go lower in price. My next post will have options that are priced higher, but focus on quality and a perfect fit.

Petite-Friendly Coats: Part One
My Sizing: I’m 4’10”, and my bust, waist, and hip measurements are 32″, 24″, and 36″. My inseam is 25″ (the measurement from the inside of my leg to my ankle bone). The clothes shown are unaltered and show how they fit me right from the store. I list my sizing beside each item to help you compare when shopping online. When referencing my true size, that is often the smallest option available at a brand or petite xxs/00/24. I wear a size 5 shoe.
Banana Republic Factory Timeless Coat
- True to size fit, sleeve length is slightly long, but not over my hands

The Timeless Coat from Banana Republic Factory has a beautiful classic fit. This coat is thick, warm, and fully lined. It’s true to size, but still has a little bit of extra room so it’s perfect to layer with. It comes in burgundy, black, camel, and ivory.

Banana Republic Factory Pea Coat
- True to size fit, sleeve length is slightly long, but not over my hands
- Thick and warm, fully lined

- Comes in navy
I have plenty of long coats, but I wanted to add a shorter pea coat to my wardrobe. This one is overall true to size, thick and warm.

J.Crew Factory City Coat
- True to size fit, sleeve length is perfect
- Thick and warm, fully lined

- Comes in gray, camel, and black
The City Coat from J.Crew Factory is a classic. This style has been around for years and is a great fit for petites. This coat is relatively warm and overall true to size. It runs slimmer than the Banana Republic Factory coats, so if you want to do thick layering under it, you may want to size up.

J.Crew Factory Lady Day Coat
- True to size fit, sleeve length is perfect
- Thick and warm, fully lined

- Comes in pink, green, and brown in petite
The Lady Day Coat is another classic that has been around for years. There is a J.Crew version of this coat, but I have also opted for the less expensive J.Crew Factory version. This coat has a drawn in waist that dresses up any outfit. It looks great with dresses, skirts, and outfits for work! I’m wearing this coat in my true size, but it runs slim, so if you’re in between sizes or want to layer thick sweaters with it, I would go up a size.
Notes on the boots: they hit the bottom of my knee so they may not be a perfect petite fit for you.
