If you’re looking for light spring layers that are petite-friendly – you’re in the right place. In this post I’m reviewing three options for petites; a cropped olive utility jacket, cropped trench coat, and a drape trench coat.

Petite-Friendly Spring Jackets
My Sizing: I’m 4’10”, and my bust, waist, and hip measurements are 32″, 24″, and 36″. My inseam is 25″ (the measurement from the inside of my leg to my ankle bone). The clothes shown are unaltered and show how they fit me right from the store. I list my sizing beside each item to help you compare when shopping online. When referencing my true size, that is often the smallest option available at a brand or petite xxs/00/24. I wear a size 5 shoe.
Cropped Olive Jacket
This is not the the jacket of 2016. Raise your hand if you had that jacket – I definitely did. I wore it heavily, it was one of my favorite layers (I still have mine). Like all good things, the utility jacket has come back around in trends this season, but the style is a little bit different than what we loved a few years ago. The utility jackets I’ve seen this season are either a little oversized and boxy, or cropped. I chose a cropped option from J.Crew Factory that has a perfect fit! This jacket is unlined and lightweight, best for mild temperatures. It is true to size, I’m wearing it in Petite XXS and it has a perfect fit. I cuffed the sleeves here for looks, not necessity – the sleeves are a great length.

Cropped Trench Coat
I have been searching for a cropped trench coat that I liked the fit of since they started to be popular last year. Most of them had too much fabric in the front for me and had to be worn closed to work. I wanted an option I could wear open and found my perfect fit in this one from J.Crew Factory. I love the swing style, the fact that it can be worn open or closed, and the slightly puffed sleeves. The sleeves are a little bit cropped on me in petite, so if you ever go with regular sizing at J.Crew due to the sleeve length, you may prefer to do that with this jacket. It is unlined and lightweight, best for mild temperatures. It is true to size, for reference I’m wearing it in Petite XXS.

Drape Trench Coat
I have remained set on the J.Crew Icon Trench Coat for years as the petite option that fits me well. It’s still the best overall fit if you want a well tailored and close fit. However, if you’re looking for a modern drape style – this trench coat from Edited Pieces is beautiful and petite-friendly. This coat drapes beautifully, the fabric doesn’t wrinkle easily and it looks great dressed up and down. It’s an under $200 option as well. As far as the fit goes, I went up a size to XS, but I think I could have gone with XXS and that would be a better fit for me. In XS it is a little bit roomy, but still fits well. The sleeves come over my hands just a tiny bit, but they are easy to cuff or wear pushed back.

All of these light layers will also serve you well in the fall.
