Sage Trench Coat Four Ways

Wearing a long coat when you’re petite has its challenges. Long coats are beautiful – and on trend – but I get lost in the the vast majority of them that I’ve tried. Which is why you’ll see that most of the coats I share here are above or at the knee. Since it is the trend to wear a long coat there are no shortage of “fashion tips” given to me on social media to “wear a longer coat” and also sincere requests from readers for petite-friendly options that go past the knee. So, although many of them have been fails for me, I keep looking. I recently found a sage green option at Ann Taylor that I didn’t feel like I was drowning in. So if you’ve been on the hunt for a long trench coat, you may love this one too. The lightweight fabric flows easily and isn’t overwhelming for petites. However, due to the longer length, I won’t wear this coat with just anything; read on to see how I make a long trench coat work for my petite frame.

Sage Trench Coat Four Ways

My Sizing: I’m 4’10”, and my bust, waist, and hip measurements are 32″, 24″, and 36″. My inseam is 25″ (the measurement from the inside of my leg to my ankle bone). The clothes shown are unaltered and show how they fit me right from the store. I list my sizing beside each item to help you compare when shopping online. When referencing my true size, that is often the smallest option available at a brand or petite xxs/00/24. I wear a size 5 shoe.

Sage Trench Coat

This coat has a relaxed fit, but I would still consider it to be true to size. For reference, I’m wearing it in Petite XXS. If you want a closer fit I think you can go down a size and still be comfortable.

How to Wear a Long Trench Coat

The coat comes close to my ankles. Worn with flats I look extra short and a little bit lost in the length. So, I like to style it with anything that gives me the illusion of longer legs. If you’re wearing pants or jeans go for full-length styles that can be worn with heels. Full-length flares and wide-leg styles are the best. If you prefer straight cut pants and jeans I would wear them with a nude heel – that can be nude heeled boots, sandals, or pumps. If you’re wearing a dress or a skirt, go with bare ankles and nude shoes – if they have a pointed toe even better!

Here are a few examples:

Flare Jeans

The jeans in this outfit are from Ann Taylor. They’re full stretch denim and overall true to size. In petite, they have a high 11″ rise and a 29″ inseam. I took the measurements from Petite 24 and I’m wearing a 2″ heel with the jeans in this outfit.

White Trousers

I’m restyling a couple of of the pants I included in my recent winter capsule for some ideas for how I would wear them into the spring. In my opinion all of the pants can be worn through all seasons (to note, this white pair is a little thick, so maybe not in all regions). In petite the white pants have a 29.5″ inseam. I think the green of this coat looks so fresh paired with white! The pants are true to size and the measurement was taken from Petite 00.

Black Trousers

The black and navy trousers I included in the winter capsule wardrobe are well proportioned for petites. They have a 10″ rise which is lower than a lot of the trousers out there. In petite, they have a 28.5″ inseam which is one of the shortest I’ve come across. As much as I love white with the coat, an all black base is a striking option as well. The pants are true to size and the measurements were taken from Petite 00.

With a Skirt

I couldn’t miss an opportunity to style my sage Twirl Skirt with the sage jacket. I love tonal outfits and this one is no exception. If this is your first time seeing the Twirl Skirt on my blog, it runs small – I personally opt for XS, but it also comes in XXS. It’s fully lined and has such a beautiful drape and fit. To balance the length of the coat I paired the skirt with nude pointed toe heels.
