I may not be the biggest fan of winter, and the cold – but can I get a collective cheer for sweater weather? The sweater is the champion of winter, and one of the few things I love about the season. They’re cozy, warm, and perfect for hiding those extra winter pounds. (Ahem, just speaking for myself there.) Of course, the sweater can also be a fickle beast. They come with different laundering instructions, some of them pill to death, making them essentially useless next season, and some can be downright expensive. So, I’ve tried on countless sweaters, tested knits and styles to come up with three essential styles, and winning picks in each category – just for you!
Three Sweaters Every Girl Needs for Winter
1.Classic Cable-Knit
First on my list is a classic cable-knit sweater. I’m talking a legit, wool, thick and warm cable-knit sweater; close to its roots of a sweater made to keep fishermen warm. Not a thin sweater that looks like cable knit, nope this one needs to keep you warm on a snowy day. The cable-knit is classic, preppy and polished, and if chosen well, will last years. The one I’m wearing is a popcorn cable-knit from J.Crew. This sweater is so thick and warm, but I will warn you, it is a tad scratchy. I wear a form fitted long sleeve top under mine, like a Cuddlduds top or a tissue turtleneck. Now, before you scoff at the price, because yes, at full price it’s expensive, please buy it on sale. All holiday season J.Crew has been running 40%-50% off sales on this cutie, making it well worth the purchase! The one I’m wearing is hand wash only, but for good measure I launder most of my sweaters with Dryel to avoid ruining them.
2. Cozy Cardigan
Although I did purchase one classic fit cardigan this season, I just can’t stop wearing long cozy, oversized cardigans instead. Oversized cardigans are like a warm hug. I always feel comfortable, and still put together in them. I shared the one I’m wearing here in Monday’s post. It’s new to me, but I’m hoping the fabric will hold up well. I sure do love the fit!
3. Turtleneck Sweater
Turtlenecks are so warm, I can sometimes get away with just wearing one with a vest and staying warm enough. I have quite a few in my wardrobe, from thin layering styles like the tissue turtleneck, all the way up to big chunky turtleneck sweaters. The one I’m wearing here is a favorite from Old Navy. This sweater is affordable, comfortable, and washes well. I’m able to wash it in the washing machine, I even accidentally dried it once and it survived. As far as fit goes, if you’re petite like me, I would choose regular instead of petite, due to sleeve length.
When I’m not hibernating indoors this winter, you can find in a sweater. What about you?
