Petite-Friendly Back-To-School Outfits for Teachers

Dress codes vary but if you’re able to wear black jeans to work, this pair from J.Crew factory has a great fit. I chose the mid-rise version, but they also come in a higher rise if you prefer that. They have a little bit of stretch to them and are true to size. For me, that’s Petite 24. If you can’t wear jeans to work, I recommend these black pants, also from J.Crew Factory. They run a little bit snug so I would size up. I wear them in Petite 0. The top is also true to size and I’m wearing it in Petite XS. I know shoe choice is also important for teachers since you’re on your feet most of the day. This pair is comfortable overall but does have a breaking-in period. I wear them in my true size, but they are a little bit roomy. I personally prefer the extra room for comfort so I wouldn’t recommend sizing down.

When the temps are still in the 90s in most places and you need to go from the classroom to recess duty a dress or skirt may be a good option, so I focused a lot on those in this post. If you’re a preschool or kindergarten teacher and need to sit down on the ground with your littles a lot during the day, you could add a pair of bike shorts underneath. For this outfit, in particular, the skirt is true to size. If you’re in-between sizing, you may want to size up for a most comfortable fit in the waist which can be a little bit snug. The skirt is fully lined and has pockets. The top runs large and doesn’t come in petite. I’m wearing it in XXS, if you can size down I would recommend that.

I hate to go against reviews on an item because it’s really just everyone’s opinion. So while some reviewers find this dress to be see-through, I don’t. Granted it may be a lighting thing and I just haven’t hit that lighting that gives that vibe to me. It is white, so you’ll need nude undergarments but that’s always true of wearing white or light colors. The fabric is thick and not sheer and the drawstring waist is adjustable. The top buttons are also functional. It is true to size and I’m wearing it in Petite XXS. The shoes are also true to size. I’m partial to this pair from Madewell, but it’s a common style that can be found in other places as well.

When I first saw this dress online I was really sad it didn’t come in petite and almost didn’t order it but ultimately decided it was worth a shot. I was pleasantly surprised to find it fits well, despite not being petite. I’m wearing it in XXS. I added a denim jacket as an option for layers, I know it can often be cold indoors, but of course still very hot outside and you’ll want to ditch the jacket.

I know that jeans are not always an option depending on where you teach. If you can’t wear jeans, the pants I mentioned in the first outfit would work great with this outfit instead. In this case, the jeans run true to size, I’m wearing them in Petite 24. They are rigid but stretch with wear. The top is the same as the black top I’m wearing above. It runs large and doesn’t come in petite, I’m wearing it in XXS but I would recommend sizing down if possible. The sweater is true to size and is one of my favorite Amazon purchases to date. It washes well, it’s a great weight for summer and goes with everything! My exact color is “oatmeal”.
