I’ve been a big water fan for years, and we used to really throw back some bottled water in our house. Since drinking a lot of water was important to me, I would carry around multiple bottles of water a day – and fully stock the fridge at home and work with bottled water. I felt good about what I was doing for myself, making it easier to drink more water – but I was ignoring what impacts my habits may have on the environment, until my eyes were opened to the consequences.
The Ugly Truth
Have you see the big plastic island just floating in the ocean? I only needed to see pictures of it once to know I needed to make a change. The truth is, enough plastic to fill a dump trunk ends up in the ocean every minute. EVERY MINUTE! Let that sink in. Another harsh reality, at this rate by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean. It’s time for us to break up with single-use plastic.
Saying Goodbye to Bottled Water
I officially parted ways with bottled water about two years ago. I originally just wanted to rid my family of bottled water and went with stainless steel water bottles for each of us. However, only a day into those stainless steel water bottles and the boys and I were both hooked – your water will never be colder and more enjoyable! So, needless to say, it wasn’t a hard transition.
Brita Filtering Bottle
The Brita Filtering Bottle is the one bottle my family loves. We each have our own that we carry around all day, to school, work, soccer – we even use these at dinner! Why bother with dirtying a dish if you don’t have to, am I right?!
This Brita Filtering Bottle is stainless steel (like we love) so it keeps our water cold for up to 24 hours. What’s great is that you can refill it with cold water all day long for refreshing drinking water anytime throughout the day. Plus, this bottle filters as you drink through the straw, so whichever fountain we’re getting our water – it’s going to taste great!
Sustainable Swap
While I love the Brita Filtering Bottle for it’s cold tasty water, I also love that it can replace 1,800 plastic water bottles a year. Good for the environment, and good for your wallet! As a whole, we spend $13 billion on bottled water each year, yikes!
This simple sustainable swap works for my family, could it work for yours too?
