Last week after sharing the midi skirt styling session, I received a request to style straight jeans (or cropped, or wide jeans). Then I received another and another! Straight jeans are back in a big way, and while they may take some getting used to, since they’re a change from the skinnies we’ve all become accustomed to, they’re universally flattering, and more comfortable than skinny jeans. The hardest part is finding a pair that fits you well. Once you do that, you’ll find it’s fairly easy to style and wear straight jeans.
Starting with a pair that fits well. I’ve tried straight jeans from Old Navy, Madewell, LOFT and J.Crew – all of my favorite places to buy jeans. However, I found the only pair I truly loved on my frame is a J.Crew pair. Similar to the straight leg eco jeans I styled a few times last year, these jeans are less distressed than that pair, and have a button fly and a cropped leg.
The jeans are on the more expensive side, but I always recommend waiting for J.Crew to run a 40% off sale, which does happen from time to time (just not as often as LOFT). I wanted to love the Old Navy jeans because they’re a better price point, but they were too long and unflattering on me. I also didn’t love the Madewell or LOFT jeans. Madewell was too long and didn’t have a raw hem and I felt like the heavy hem wasn’t as flattering as the raw hem. The LOFT jeans did not have a high enough rise for me.
I’m typically the most comfortable styling straight jeans with flats, heels and sneaks, but I received a request in particular to see them with booties or boots. I know in many parts of the country it’s just too cold to wear flats in the winter, although that’s not the case for me. So, I wanted to show a nice mix of booties, heels and flats.
Four Ways to Wear Straight Jeans
Simple with Flats
The easiest way is with a simple tee, or body suit for a streamlined fit and a color pop from a cute pair of flats! I love that the bodysuit shows off the figure flattering fit and it makes a great base layer to throw on a jacket, blazer, or cardigan for extra warmth or style.

With a Blazer and Heels
I’ve probably worn my straight jeans the most with a blazer and heels. It’s a little dressed up, and the straight cut looks great with leg elongating heels. Underneath I’m wearing the same bodysuit as the outfit above.

With Booties
Now for what I found to be a little bit more challenging. Seeing booties with straight jeans takes some getting used to for me. However, I think the pointed toe of my booties and the way the jeans just barely rise above the boot make for a flatting fit. I’ve also tried this look with a darker and printed boot and just didn’t love it as much, it made me look a little bit shorter. But the way these booties in particular are very close to my skin tone helps gives that leg elongating effect like the nude pumps.

With Booties and a Sweater
Now, for that everyday kind of outfit. Proving that straight jeans can become your go-to just like a pair of skinny jeans.

As far as sizing, I’m wearing the jeans in petite 24. I’m 4’10” and that’s how they hit me right from the store, no altering. If you need something a little bit longer, I recommend taking a look at Madewell’s straight jeans. They have the same fit up top as the J.Crew jeans with a little more length in the leg.
