Where To Buy Your Fall Wardrobe Basics

For weeks I’ve been dreaming of fall temps. It’s been hot and humid, and I’ve been complaining. However, this week, we got those fall temps, and I forgot just how cold it gets…it’s only the beginning. I’m currently sitting at my desk, with slippers and layers because it’s pretty much an ice box in my house. Steven isn’t going to be down with me turning on the heat right about now so the sweater layers will have to do. Which brings me to the point of this post – those fall/winter basics; sweaters, boots and scarves, where are my favorite places to buy them?

1. Basic layering tops – My requirements when it comes to a basic layering piece is, quality, price, fit, and the ability to wash well. Since they’re pretty basic, there isn’t a whole lot to picking them out, but you would be surprised how many basics I’ve purchased over the years that have just been a waste of money. I’m also not going to deal with a basic layering top that needs to be hung dry to last, if it’s basic, it better withstand a normal wash and dry cycle. I’ll quit rambling – my current favorite with their ponte knit is Old Navy. I never liked Old Navy’s knit tops in the past, they were cheap and didn’t last, but this ponte knit is different. It’s thick and washes well. I have been a fan of the flare sleeve tops. Despite the bell sleeve, they still layer well under cardigans and jackets, and look pretty cute with vests too. I also love to buy basic tees at Target, Loft and get this – Sam’s Club. The Eddie Bauer tees that they sell at Sam’s Club are a comfortable fit and they wash well…and they’re cheap. Win.

2. Sweaters and Jackets – Sweaters and jackets always require a little maintenance if you want to keep them looking nice through washes. I always wash and lay my sweaters out flat to dry, some even require dry cleaning, which means Dryel to me. However, sweaters are not created equal and I’ve found some of the best will last through many seasons. I’ve had the most luck with sweaters and outerwear from Loft, J. Crew (not factory) and Banana Republic. Banana Republic has been one of the best for me – the sweaters and really any type of outwear I’ve picked up from there has lasted and still looks great years later. Totally worth the investment.

3. Boots – Most leather boots are going to last you no matter where you buy them from. So I’m sharing my favorite place to buy shoes instead. Nordstrom not only carries my size, they have the BEST customer service. Their shipping is fast, returns are easy, and they offer in stock (or even curbside) pick-up. By far my favorite!

4. Scarves & Accessories – I’m a cheap girl when it comes to accessories. My favorite places to pick them up are Target, Old Navy and H&M. I have a leopard scarf I purchased from H&M a few years ago for like $5-$10, if I remember right, that is identical to this one. Half the price!

I’m glad to know that I’m not the only one that gets some of my clothing at Sams!! LOL
In fact, I bought my fur vest there over 5 years ago, because I didn’t want to spend a ton of money on something that I wasn’t sure would be in style long (and funny, because they are still going strong—little did I know)
    Great post, Brooke!!!

Fall basics are a must this time of year! I am a hit or miss with Old Navy tops too but this one looks great. I also love H&M and Target for accessories and if I hit a sale rack at Nordstrom or Bloomingdales they have come through for me too. Xo, Sierra Beautifully Candid

You know what is so funny?? In my house it is my HUSBAND who is turning on the heat way early. Even though I am cold natured, I am also the one that sees the utility bill. And I love all of your places to pick up the basics! Banana has really good sweaters and outerwear.

LOVE this outfit! That top is gorgeous and I like your booties too. Isn’t it the truth about the weather? It’s been so hot since August now we’re expecting snow on Friday! The transitional seasons are non-existent in Wisconsin. We only have two seasons: Summer and Winter. LOL!

That color is beautiful on you. I need to pop into ON and check out those tops. I have that same KS necklace and wear it all.the.time. I love how you knotted your top too (you tiny little doll) So where is it you are taking those pics. I’m always trying to figure out where you and Lauren are when I see pics. I have a feeling that’s a new venue since we left 7 years ago.

That top is so pretty, perfect shade for the fall and I love the knot. I agree, it is hard sometimes to find a sweater that will last through seasons. I’ll have to take your advice on which stores are best for long lasting sweaters, because I’ve had some that start to pill after just a year! So frustrating! Those boots are super cute, too!

So funny you mentioned Banana Republic sweaters! I have this great cobalt sweater from Banana that I picked up at the thrift store at least 6 years ago and it’s still going strong! Now that I realize that I should probably try there for some new ones! Great post!

Another great post full of tips. My top 3 stores for basics are: Target, Loft and Old Navy but if I’d make it a top 5, I would add Express and American Eagle there – these last two stores in particular have great jeans. This year almost all of my sweaters are from Target and Loft, so many great pieces and I have gotten them for a great deal. But I will let you in on a secret, Lord and Taylor has their own brand both the “Lord and Taylor” and the more casual brand called “LT” which makes great sweaters and sweatshirts. Also White House Black Market has some of the best made sweaters and cardigans. I have had several of their for years and they lasted and washed so well but buy them on sale. WHBM’s sweaters are usually between $70 to like $130 bucks. In general though I love Banana Republic for ALL things.

I just need some new basics! Thanks!
