How many times have you had a weight loss goal?
Maybe never, maybe a few times or maybe you’re continually on a weight loss journey and find yourself frustrated.
We’re you successful?
It’s true, weight loss and the science behind why some of us can eat all day and not gain a pound, while some of us splurge a little and gain ten is not black and white. Which is why your fitness motivation cannot be weight loss.
For so many of us, exercise and dieting has become a negative experience. You feel deprived and you’re working hard, sweating it out each and every day for weeks or months and you’re not seeing the results you want. You start to feel like why bother, right?
Or, you work hard, drop 20-30 pounds and slack off, because you’ve met your goal. Then what happens? Old habits bounce back.
Or, maybe you don’t have a particular number in mind, but your goal is simply weight loss. When you arrive at your healthy weight, the numbers on the scale stop dropping and the measurements remain the same. So, if you’re only motivation is weight loss, you no longer have a motivation. Do you?
The problem in all of the above scenarios is the underlying motivation, weight loss and appearance. Which is exactly why I want you to pledge to change the way you view fitness. Fitness shouldn’t just be a tool to reach a desired goal. It should be a part of you, just something you do every week, because you enjoy it. Not because you have a few pounds to lose. Fitness, also should not be stressful. Do you have to workout everyday? No. Commit to at least a few days a week and you are good to go!
If you go into your life change with the intention of adding something enjoyable and enriching to your life, there won’t be any room for negative feelings. Weight loss will be the secondary gain to your new lifestyle and instead of meticulously tracking your loss on the scale and beating yourself up when you feel it isn’t enough, it will be a gentle rewarding experience. Naturally, if you love what you’re doing, you will keep doing it, regardless if you’ve met a set goal or not!
The other advantage, of changing your mindset, is avoiding unrealistic goals. We are all from different backgrounds and are all shaped so differently. So, one girl’s healthy will not necessarily look just like another girl’s healthy. You are unique, never aim to look like a picture you pasted to the front of your refrigerator (unless it is a picture of you ;))
So, quit stressing, just have fun. Trust me, if you mix up your fitness and keep it interesting you will see results and continually feel stronger and healthier. One week it can be running, the next swimming, kickboxing, barre, spinning, dancing, yoga, etc. Variety is the best thing you can ever do for yourself and your body, keep those muscles guessing and boredom at bay! Your only goal should be consistent activity. Change your focus and see how easy it becomes.
So, who is with me? Are you done fighting with yourself. Pledge to stop the scale obsession and the mirror critique sessions. You are better than that! You are unique, own your beauty and make fitness about health, not appearance.
