Thank you Nordstrom for sponsoring this post.
Grab a pair of water-resistant boots and a warm pair of leggings and you’ve got yourself the perfect foundation for a winter outfit. For all of my readers out there, I know that winter can look very different based on where you live. My blog reaches all over the world (which is mind-blowing to me) but I enjoy talking with each and every one of you. Some of you have asked for outfits for super cold, below freezing winters and some of you have asked for lighter outfits for very mild winters. So, today, I’m sharing three petite-friendly ways to layer with this easy foundational combination, of boots and leggings, to stay comfortable no matter what your climate is.
Three Ways to Layer for Winter Weather
First, let’s talk about the boots. These Caslon boots from Nordstrom run true to size. I sized up a 1/2 size in mine to get more room for warm socks. Nordstrom is one of my favorite places to look for shoes in general because they offer size 5 and sometimes under a size 5 in many of their shoes. The black has sold out in my exact pair of boots, but you may also like this pair of boots which is similar and comes in a size 5 and under. The boots are water-resistant and although they aren’t super warm on their own, you can easily add different socks based on your weather.
The leggings are from Nordstrom’s Zelle line. I’m wearing them in Petite XS and they fit me well! They’re thick and warm with light compression and in my opinion, they’re the perfect weight to be comfortable in most temperatures.
Mild Weather
If your winter weather is mild this one is for you. I wore my boots with a pair of pillow sole socks that are thin, but still warm and comfortable. The top is light and can be worn tunic length (which I’ll show below), or you can tuck it up to wear with a jacket. I tucked the top into my leggings by tucking a little in the front and then doing a fold under and twist tuck in the back. This jacket is soft, but it’s a very light layer. It’s lined but not heavily lined so it would be great for mild winter weather. I’m wearing it in XXS and it has a slightly oversized fit.

Cold Weather
For bitter cold winters add a puffer coat or vest. I chose this vest because it has a cinched-in waist with the belt which I think helps it not be as overwhelming on my petite frame. The reality is, I’ve never come across a true super warm puffer anything that wasn’t a little overwhelming on me – so I’ll take all of the help I can get. This vest comes in XXS, which is the size I’m wearing and although it’s longer on me than it is on the model, I think it fits well. It’s also light and soft and is made from recycled polyester. I paired it with a warm and thick turtleneck for extra warmth. With my boots, I chose warm winter socks which is where the extra room in my boots pays off.

Both
If you live somewhere with back and forth weather like me you can keep your layering options open with light layers. I kept the same warm turtleneck from the outfit above and added a light flannel top to finish off the outfit. It can be worn just like this if it’s mild outside or can fit under a warm coat or vest easily. I’m wearing the flannel top in XXS and it runs large.
