I did it y’all – I found a pair of denim shorts I really really like. It took a lot of trying on, ordering and returning and even keeping a few pairs I wish I didn’t, to find this pair.
I ordered this pair on a total whim when I was making an Old Navy order a couple of weeks ago. They were kind of so-so online, but being Old Navy, they’re really affordable and I thought why not?!
When it comes to denim shorts, I was looking for a few things in particular. I wanted the trendy cut off style, without a rise that went past my belly button, and a back that didn’t ride up some kind of bad. I didn’t want the shorts too short, or too long. I like to keep my modesty, but I also know the longer the shorts, the heavier they look on short legs. This pair, hits all of the sweet spots and they’re around $20. They also come in a lighter wash I just may need as well.
Six Ways to Wear Denim Shorts
I’ve talked mostly about linen shorts and drawstring shorts here lately, but denim shorts will always have my heart. Most summers I find myself wearing a pair of denim shorts and a t-shirt regularly. So, I tried to show a nice blend of outfits here, from a basic comfy tee and sandals, to dressed up a little bit more with a blazer.
With a Kimono
Kimonos can be overwhelming on someone who is petite, but they’ve been having their moment for me. I love throwing this light layer on top of simple tees and even dresses (which you’ll see in an upcoming style session). I’m showing two different color combinations here, because ya’ know, when you love something, why not rock it in multiple colors.

With Tie-Dye
Tie-dye is also having a big moment for me lately. It just may be one of my favorite trends in recent years, and I’ve had to practice restraint and not buy all the tie-dye. Something else that’s been big in my life currently -Target drive up. So, a lot of the tops I’m wearing in this post are from Target and super affordable. This top does have lower arm holes, but I put a nude cami under mine and think it works!

With a Blazer
Since these shorts have a shorter inseam, I stuck to flat sandals instead of wedges or heels with this look. If you wanted to be a little more dressed up, say for a date night or something like that, you can easily wear this with wedges. I can no longer link to J.Crew in my shop the post widgets (hopefully only a temporary thing), so the below items are similar items. You can find the exact tank top, and the exact blazer through these links.

With a Cute Top
My style has been relying on basic tees a lot lately, because I haven’t found many printed and detailed tops I like. I love my basic tees, but I’ve been craving cute prints and details. When I saw this top online, I knew it was going to be so sweet for summer. I was even happier when I found that it fit me! This top is swingy and light, which will be great for hot summer days.

With a Graphic Tee
I’ve been looking for the perfect graphic tee to jump on the graphic tee trend. I think it’s cute as can be, but a lot of the trendy tops are based on classic rock – and I don’t even listen to classic rock. It felt weird to me. So, when I saw this simple sunshine tee, I knew it was perfect for my take on the trend!

I was invited to join in with a few other style bloggers on IGtv for this style session, so be sure to stop over there and visit the other bloggers styling denim shorts too.

Those are the perfect shorts on you, and I love all six outfits. I just ordered a new pair of denim shorts from Target. Can’t wait to see how they fit and if I like them. XO
I love wearing denim shorts with kimonos but have never with a blazer! I’m going to have to try that!
Jill – Doused in Pink
I like how it dresses them up!
I haven’t tried targets shorts yet, you’ll have to let me know what they’re like!
