So you’re resolving to exercise more, eh? Good for you! There is nothing wrong with striving for a more active lifestyle. One way to do this, especially if you don’t have a gym membership to work with, is to get outside and hit the pavement! Does the thought of running out in the cold make you cringe? I totally get it! I am NOT a cold weather person. But getting out for a walk/run during these cold winter months doesn’t have to be a struggle. It just takes the right gear to make sure you stay warm and motivated.
1. Solid running tights – I loooooooove these compression tights that came to me c/o Fabletics. Not only are they are thick and sturdy which really helps to prevent cold air from getting through but they also wick away moisture keeping you dry and comfortable.
2. Fleece lined performance top – Performance tops also help wick away moisture which essential to staying dry and warm during your run. I like the ones with armholes so the shirt stays in place (this comes in handy when putting gloves on).
3. Hat – The key to keeping not only your ears but your whole body warmer.
4. Gloves – I know if I don’t wear gloves when I go running in the cold my fingers turn to ice. I like this pair of convertible mittens where the mitten part flips back to expose the fingertips so I don’t have to take off my gloves whenever I need to do something on my phone.
5. Yes Belt – I have my husband to thank for finding this little gem. Seriously, the ultimate solution to phones now being the size of mini-tablets and the challenge of finding an armband that will actually keep your phone in place. The band goes around your waist and has little slots where you can stick in your phone.
6. Sunnies – Because there is nothing worse than sun in your eyes…ok there is but for me it really cuts my running time if I’m being blinded in the face by the bright sun.
7. Tunes & Ear-Buds – Music really helps when I need a fire lit under my butt to get moving. Lately I’ve been jamming out a lot to the 311 station on Pandora but I tend to toggle between Rap/Hip-Hop & Alternative Rock for getting pumped up during a run.
(Not pictured above)
8. Good running shoes – Don’t try to hit the streets in street shoes.
9. Additional layers – Depending on how cold it is, you may need an extra layer above your performance top but remember that once you get going you’ll start to warm up and too many layers may leave you feeling overheated.

Currently training for a 10k so this was great for me! Thanks!

That belt is genius! I need one! My only problem with winter running is the bike paths completely covered in snow till about March. 🙁 Treadmill for me till then!

I hate running, especially in the Winter. You go girl!

great tips… I”m not much of a runner and when I do it’s NOT in the winter lol To be fair, we have a ton of ice and snow and I’d very likely kill myself. I will keep these tips in mind for early spring/late fall!

Yes, gloves are an absolute MUST! And, the Yes Belt looks interesting!! I have an iPhone6 Plus and found a good band that works on my arm, but sometimes I get chafing if I run 13.1 miles in it and I have a short sleeved shirt on (not now, but when I run when its warmer)… I need to check out that belt!

Thanks girl!! It’s from H&M 🙂
That’s awesome because I always have had difficulty finding one that felt comfortable on my arm. The belt would totally prevent the chaffing issue. I totally didn’t realize you were such a big runner – good for you girl!! 🙂 I have done 3 half-marathons and my knees can’t take that kind of distance – by then end of all 3 they were throbbing.
Totally justifiable reason!! That’s dangerous and definitely not worth potentially breaking something.
Thanks girlie!
Thank you Rachel, you too! 🙂
lol I hear ya, I like running up to about a 10K – beyond that my knees start killing me!
I know – soooooo comfortable!! Thank you so much! Have a wonderful week 🙂
I know right?! Oh man – definitely not good conditions for running. At least you don’t have to worry about layering up 🙂
You are welcome! 🙂
These tips are really useful- my New Years resolution to get more fit hasn’t gone too well so far but there is always time! I need to invest in a fleece lined top for running in!

Oh yea girl – you have like 348 days left in the year (you get an extra day since its a leap year!) I’m glad to hear these were helpful 🙂
Oh man! I hate running outside… I might need to try it with a few of those tips!

I joined a running club to hold me accountable for running in the winter. So far it’s been working!

Smart idea!!
Yes! Definitely! When its real cold I have to bust out the scarf too.
That’s awesome – I wish that was how it is here. It’s definitely a challenge to get out into the cold but doable when dressed right 🙂
Thanks girlie! 🙂 Have a great week!
lol Hopefully they help if you decide to head outdoors. 🙂
I need to psyche myself up to get out running! Thanks for the warm outfit recommendations
My problem with running in the cold is that my lungs just burn, the cold just hurts. sometimes it gets better when I run a little slower but I am not sure how to avoid it completely, it really hurts and I would like to start running again even on the cold days…

I’m not a runner but still very good tips for those that are active. I have yet to purchase a pair of fingerless gloves….I’m not sure why yet.
Awesome tips! I’m so demotivated to exercise when it’s cold outside!

All great tips! I have such a hard time running when it’s cold out. I usually just want to curl up under the blanket. I LOVE those sunnies too! <3, Pamela Sequins & Sea Breezes
You look totally cute in your winter fitness gear. I have the opposite problem because when it’s sweltering hot and humid is when my trainer loves to workout outdoors LOL.

Such great tips and awesome running gear .I used to love running but now it’s literally like I will start from tomorrow and that 2mrw never comes but then when you have 2 kids I guess you get more exercise than you need.

I totally admire people who run in the cold. Either they’re really passionate about running (or crazy to go in the cold for that long haha).

lol you’re welcome! You don’t have to run – you can go for a walk 🙂 Sometimes thats a lot easier!
Oh I totally know what you mean – When its ice cold, I usually have to wear a super thick scarf that drapes across my mouth to warm up the air I breath because that lung burn is no joke.
lol you should!! Totally helpful with smartphones and such, even if not used for running. 🙂
Thanks girl! I hear ya, my natural tendency is to hibernate during the winter so I have to fight that.
I know what you mean – its so much more comfortable under a blanket 🙂
Thanks girl!! Thats funny and definitely a whole other challenge. But honestly I LOOOVE working out in the swealtering heat because theres a special hard core sweat that happens and you just feel cleaned out.
Yay! I’m so happy to hear that 🙂 Thanks for coming by Julianna – hope you are having a fantastic week xoxo
Oh yay, thanks girl!! 🙂
Seriously!! I mean I only have a 3 month old who doesn’t move yet she constantly has me up and running around. 🙂
Thanks girl! I think its more like a crazy thing…haha
I totally get it girl – I’ve been there. 🙂 You should call up on a friend who is also interested in getting out for a walk/run – it makes things a LOT easier!!
This is definitely a great post & super helpful as I find it hard to motivate myself to run in the cold. I do it a few times, but I just get frozen in the face & my hands freeze too. Eeeek! xx adaatude.com
lol I know winter running can definitely be a lot less pleasant at times – I’m glad this helped!
I’m so glad I came across this post! Im always fumbling with my phone in the gym. Will definitely be investing in a Yes Belt 🙂 🙂
It’s awesome I tell ya 🙂
Love these tips! I’m definitely trying to get my butt back in gear after a long break from working out and this post helped!!
