Ok so what do you call the hat that I am wearing today? A beanie? A toboggan? A knit cap? I’ve always referred to this style of hat as a beanie. I remember during my first semester in college down in good ol’ North Kakalak, one of my NC friends called it a toboggan. We got into a debate regarding the proper naming of this hat, my argument being that a toboggan was a sled. I know there are many variations on what people call it depending on where they are from. I’m from Virginia and feel like many of my friends also refer to this hat as a beanie. So, I want to know, what do you call it and what part of the country/world are you from?

That is definitely a beanie! Although people around here call a water fountain a bubbler so I am not sure if you can trust what I say! 😉
Wish I looked good in hats because I love the popular beanies with the pom on the top, like yours!!

I’ve always called it a beanie, but when we moved to Alabama they said toboggan. I think it must be a southern thing! Looks cute on you regardless. 🙂

I can’t believe this hasn’t been posted yet – but here in Canada we call that kind of hat a toque. (pronounced TOOK). A toboggan is a sled, a beanie is a very thin hat worn for fashion (and not warmth) and that toque is very cute.
Love your sweater too.

I was just about to second that.
Very cute look and hat! Since I am from the south, most would call it a toboggan (although I also refer to sleds as the same). My boys have always called them beanies, and I suppose I typically do as well.
Loving this casual look on you!

We’re so boring in Washington – we just call it a hat! I think my favorite is the canadian toque.
Your hair is perfect…I want waves like that, do tell 🙂 That hat is also adorable on you, love the whole outfit.
Definitely a beanie in the my part of the Midwest!

I called it a beanie until I heard someone refer to it as a pom pom hat – and then I confused! It is cute hat, though. I would think of sled for toboggan, too.

This is such a comfy and chic look! And I love your beanie! I think here in Winnipeg they would call it a pom pom hat or toque. Canadians 🙂

Yeah I call this style of hat a beanie too, if not a ‘bobble hat’! You really suit this beanie by the way, your healthy, wavy hair appearing underneath looks perfect 🙂

Thanks girl! 🙂
Thank you! I really love when I can keep things basic.
Thanks girl! 🙂
Thank you darlin!
Thats so funny! Must be a southern thing (even though my friend from NC protested that, saying I was from the south since I was from VA but I’m from Richmond which is kinda more neutral seeing as we are only 2 hours below DC – at least that was my argument lol).
Oh hey, thats awesome! 🙂 Thank you!
Yay! Another win for beanie 🙂 Thank you!
Isn’t that a funny name for it? Maybe because people wanted a nickname for the thing you wear on your head when tobogganing.
Nice post
Lovely photos

Thank you Katie! I love these flats – they are definitely a pair that I will be sad about when they bite the dust.

Thank you so much sweet ladies xoxo
Thank you Shea! Not boring at all – that is what it is! 😉
Thank you doll, hope you do too!
Me tooooooo!! Thanks girl 🙂
Thank you Brittany!
Thank you Victoria! 🙂
Thank you sweets! 🙂 xoxo
hehe it’s funny how certain things get random nicknames depending on geographical location.
Thank you sweetie!
I agree – it totally has to be a deep southern thing. Thank you darling! 🙂
That is so cool to learn that because I hadn’t heard that before! 🙂
Thanks girlie!
That’s not boring. 🙂 I actually had never heard it called a toque before this post – so interesting!
Thank you so much!! You are so sweet! I just cut my hair (this was taken before) which I am kind of regretting because I’m having a harder time getting the curls right. Its all about starting from the innermost layer of your hair and then keep working your way out. 🙂 Use clips to help hold the hair you are not curling out of the way.
Yay! I feel like beanie is definitely a more prevalent nickname.
I feel like pom pom hat is actually a more appropriate term for this style of hat. lol Thanks girlie!
Thank you Darcy 🙂
Thank you!! 🙂
Very cool! Thanks girl!
Thank you! I feel like I have to be wearing my hair curly for it to look decent otherwise my hair just looks flattened out underneath.
Thank you Jackie! hehe so cool to learn of a nickname I had never heard before (toque) – this has definitely been consistent amongst those coming from up there in Canada. 🙂

Thanks girl! So cool to know that even in Australia its called a beanie. I feel like beanie is probably the most common nickname for these hats.
Thank you!
Another win for beanie 🙂 hehe I also might call it a pom pom hat
Thanks Daphnee! 🙂
Thank you so much Erica 😉
Thanks girlie! xo
Thank you 🙂
Oooo bobble hat! That’s a fun one. I think I saw that one when I was looking up alternative names out of curiosity. Thank you so much Gabrielle 🙂
Thank you! xo 🙂
Yay! 🙂 Thank you!
Thank you so much darling!
Thank you sweetie! Beanie for the win, hehe
Thank you so much! 🙂
Thank you!
Thank you! 🙂
So looks like beanie is pretty much the term that is most common. When I searched in shop style for a had similar to this, they even used the term beanie. 🙂
Thank you doll – you are so sweet! 🙂
Aww yay!!! That makes me so happy 🙂 xoxo
Thank you Michelle! xoxo
Thank you 🙂
Thanks sweetie! So I was sitting in a brewery here in RVA and saw hats they were selling being referred to as toboggans and the first thing I wondered was if the person put in charge of selling those was from down further south. hehe
I have never even heard of the word toboggan. I definitely call this a beanie. Your outfit is so cute. I love that sweater (and your beanie) and too bad I missed out on that adorable necklace.
I just started a new linkup on my blog this week and this outfit is too good not to share. You and Brooke should add your latest cute looks and share these beanie posts with me. I’d love to see you there. Thank you, Ada. =)
