We all come in many beautiful shapes and sizes, which means we also all come with our own set of fit issues when it comes to our clothes. For me, I have the fit issue of being petite. With the exception of a few select stores, nearly everything I’ve ever tried on, is too big for me. (Except for the shorts at American Eagle currently which I’m pretty sure were made for children, but more on that later.) Over the years I’ve found a few ways to get around my fit issues; from tailoring, tucking, belting and giving up women’s clothes all together and shopping in the girls section. Today in particular, I’m talking about the girls section and why petite women shouldn’t overlook it.
If the Dress Fits: Why Petite Women Shouldn’t Overlook Shopping in the Girls Section
I only started shopping in the girls section more often in the last couple of years. I always had a little fear that people would be able to tell I was wearing children’s clothes basically, or I would look just like a little girl. Well ever since I turned the 30 bend, I’ve cared less about looking younger and more about finding things that fit. The surprising part, the things I buy in the girls section are often my most complimented and most, “where did you get that?!” items.
Reason 1: IT WILL FIT!
In a world of everything being a little too big for me, when I slip on something that actually fits, it feels good. Midi dresses and maxi dresses are the right length, jackets aren’t oversized in the shoulders and tees don’t hang low on my hips (and add weight). It’s a welcome feeling! The surprising part about girls clothes, since I’m an adult I assumed at first I would be the largest size in girls clothes. Turns out, that’s not always the case.
This dress I’m wearing in this post is a size 14, with a very stretchy top and adjustable straps, plus plenty of length in the skirt. It’s almost a little too long for me. At Old Navy, I can get away with large instead of x-large. So, if you think you’re not quite petite enough for the girls section, you should take a look.
Reason 2: It’s Cheaper!
Nothing quite like the prices in the girls section. I bought a J. Crew Puffer Parka over Christmas, the women’s version was well over $100 (on sale) and the girls version cost me $50! I buy dresses for less than $20 bucks, and J. Crew tops that look just like the women’s version for half the price. I can wear girls shoes too, and save there!
Reason 3: No One Will Know
Sure, there are plenty things in the girls section that just aren’t meant for a grown woman, but if you choose wisely, no one will be the wiser. Many retailers sell a lot of “mommy and me” type things, especially J.Crew and Old Navy, so I find a lot of items that are near duplicates to something in the women’s section.
I’m in a phase of, if it’s gingham, I’m going to buy it, so this dress was an easy buy for me. Straight out of the girls section at J. Crew Factory. Here are a few other girls dresses (here, and here) I’ve worn on the blog!
Where my petite ladies at? Do you shop in the girls section?
