In my lifetime I’ve worn my fair share of flared jeans, bootcut jeans, ankle jeans, and of course, skinny jeans. Last year I branched out into the world of straight leg jeans, and cropped flare jeans after years of sticking to a pair of tried and true skinny jeans. It felt like stepping out for me, and it felt good to try something new – but it took me some time to rock the mom jeans trend.
What took the time, was finding a pair that didn’t look horrible on me. Mom jeans, vintage jeans, 90’s jeans – whatever you want to call them – have a tapered leg, a high rise and are not one bit stretchy or legging like. I remember my mom rocking many pairs just like them.
The fit issues for someone who is petite is the length and the rise. I tried a few other styles and sizes from AE, Abercrombie & Fitch and Madewell, and they just weren’t quite right. Either the length was too long, making my legs look heavier, or the pockets were crazy high, making my butt look longer. There was also often extra room in the front zipper area, giving a pouch effect that wasn’t cute.
Finding the Right Fit
I found a solution in sizing down in a pair of mom jeans from AE. On first try, they did feel tighter in the waist, but they fit me perfectly everywhere else. With wear, I found the waist stretches a bit and makes them more comfortable. For reference I’m wearing them in 00 x-short. I’m 4’10” and around 105lbs.
Six Ways to Wear Mom Jeans
These jeans have the highest rise I’ve ever worn, they hit me right at my belly button. Mom jeans are made to accentuate your waist, so I personally feel it looks best to wear either a top tucked all the way in, or a top that is cropped or tied up to the waist.
Cropped Top & Heels
This top is cropped, but not so cropped that you can’t also wear it with lower jeans and untucked. It comes in other prints and has buttons all down the back which is a really cute detail. I had a question last week about a similar pair of heels that aren’t as high, so I’m going to link the very same pair I shared with her in case you’re interested in the same thing!

With Mules
I think these jeans look best on me with anything that elongates the leg. My summer shoes all have that effect (nude and/or high heels) but mules can have the same effect and work great with these jeans! This blouse is also really great for wearing to work.

With Ruffles
Cute day date outfit! I tucked this top all the way in and love these heeled sandals with the jeans.

Casually
When I tried mom jeans with my sneakers, it was just too heavy – but they look great, casually, with nude sandals! The top I tied around my waist in this outfit is a new favorite of mine. It’s from Amazon and is so incredibly comfortable! I first saw it on Becca of Clothed in Grace and had to have it!

With a Blazer
Same top as above just with a blazer and heels. I’ve said it before, but sometimes all you need is a blazer to dress things up a bit.

Leopard Tee
Last one, casual one! This tee comes in lots of other colors and is a great top if you like to wear your tops knotted. However, it doesn’t have to be knotted, so it’s versatile too.

Mom Jeans
I don’t think mom jeans are going to be my everyday jeans, but I’m glad I found a pair that I can try the trend with. I’ve had requests to style them since winter and I have finally delivered, sorry it took me a bit!
What about you? Do you love the mom jean trend?
