For years I have been on again off again when it comes to yoga. This is probably due to a love/hate relationship I’ve had in that I’d curse it during but love it immediately after. I remember classes in my past where the instructor would make us hold downward dog for what seemed like an eternity between a million chaturangas and holding various other poses. The next week I would go back for more because I loved how limber I felt afterwards and how strong I felt the next day but eventually I would trade in yoga class for simple stretches.
This year I have reintroduced yoga back into my life as I took up playing soccer which has resulted in tight muscles that have needed major loosening. Plus, with the exception of short distance sprints, I do not like to put a lot of repetitive impact on my knee joints leading me to gravitate toward low impact exercises. Since yoga combines flexibility, strength and even cardio training (depending on how fast you move through the poses), it makes for quite the well rounded workout. I have a long ways to go before I can do most advanced poses but one day I hope that I can get to that level.
I have an aunt, a true yogi, who is always going on some type of yoga related adventure. She has been to multiple yoga retreats, festivals and has even taken a yoga class on a stand up paddle board (sign me up!). Between all the fun activities, physical benefits and of course cute clothes, the yoga lifestyle is definitely one that I could become accustomed to and hopefully will be what keeps me “on again” indefinitely.
