The sweater blazer has been a love of mine for a few years. It started with the neutral tan, my mom bought it for me, for my birthday three years ago. I’ve worn it every year when the weather cools down since then.
I love the sweater blazer because of the structure that comes along with it. It’s the perfect layer for fall and winter, without being overly loose and bulky. Plus, it looks really great dressed up or dressed down. It’s a classic closet staple that you’ll want to keep and wear for years.
J.Crew vs. Factory
In this post I’m wearing both the J.Crew version, in tan and black, and the J.Crew Factory version, in white. Price wise, the factory version is considerably less expensive. However, the fit is different. The factory version has slimmer and longer sleeves and fits more like a traditional blazer. The J.Crew version is more relaxed with shorter sleeves, which is great for showing off layers.
Care
The Factory version is machine washable and the J.Crew version is dry-clean only. Personally, I clean both with Dryel and it works beautifully. Side note, I use Dryel on most of my sweaters and jeans, over machine washing to help them last longer.
8 Ways to Wear a Sweater Blazer
Now, with all of the background questions out of the way, let’s get into outfits! I received more requests to see the sweater blazer styled, than any other style session. So, I tried to make this one a good one and came up with eight different outfits.
T-Shirt and Jeans
This is a basic outfit, but the sweater blazer always dresses it up. I’m sharing three different outfits with the same concept, just switching up the color combinations.

With a Dress
Pull out a simple t-shirt dress and layer on the sweater blazer for a polished look for work. I linked a long sleeve dress below to make this outfit ready for fall.

With a Skirt
The sweater blazer is polished enough to wear with a skirt and still look really pulled together. Here’s another example of the sweater blazer with a skirt from this older post.

With a Button Down
Button down or button up? I call it a button down and I love them in all different colors, fabrics and prints! I also love wearing them with my sweater blazer. You could tuck in your top, but I like leaving the flannel untucked for a relaxed look.

With Mom Jeans
Breaking out the mom jeans again! I like the look of the more structured factory blazer with my mom jeans. I put on a simple cami top underneath to dress it up a bit.

With Black Jeans
I should have styled this outfit with my black jeans that aren’t distressed, but sometimes things get wild when I’m putting these style sessions together. Not pictured, the mountain of clothes from my closet thrown on my bed! You could wear it casually with the distressed jeans or skip the knee rips for an outfit that is ready for work!
I get asked often for recommendations for petite dress pants, and I’m still searching girls. It’s hard to find a great fit. I’m currently in the struggle of every pair I try is either too long, or too tight in the thighs and backside. Somehow I can find jeans, but basic pants are another story.

If you’re ready to add a sweater blazer to your wardrobe, I recommend waiting for a good sale. They’re often 40% off at J.Crew, you just have to keep an eye out. But, you won’t regret adding this classic piece to your wardrobe!
