We just got back from a trip to Myrtle Beach, and of course it was tons of fun. We’ve been to Myrtle Beach several times over the years, and it remains one of our favorite beaches to visit. To us, it’s a good mix of relaxation, and things to entertain the kids. However, a lot of Myrtle Beach can be a huge tourist trap. So, today I’m sharing a few of our favorite places to visit around Myrtle Beach, that are high on fun and experience, but won’t drain your bank account.
Murrells Inlet Marshwalk
Each time we’re in Myrtle Beach, we make it a point to visit the Murrells Inlet Marshwalk. A short drive south of the hustle and bustle of Myrtle Beach you’ll find the quaint, historic fishing village of Murrells Inlet.
The Marshwalk lines several restaurants that have beautiful views, and often hosts live music. We love to eat dinner there, but also just love taking in the views (including the goats on “Goat Island“).
Huntington Beach State Park
You can fish, swim, bike and hike in Huntington Beach State Park, but our favorite thing about the park is the programs they put on for the kids. We took the boys to an event that taught us about seining. The boys got to be part of sein fishing, and we were taught how to dig for clams. Aside from the many fun programs they host, the park itself is quiet and beautiful. While you’re there, you should also visit Atalya Castle.
Atalaya Castle
Atalaya isn’t a place we visit every year, but if you’ve never been, I recommend giving it a visit. This historic landmark was once the home of Archer and Anna Huntington. You can find out more about the history here.
Brookgreen Gardens
Across the street from Huntington State Park and Atalya, you’ll find Brookgreen Gardens. Inside you’ll find botanical gardens, sculptures and a small zoo.
Of course, there are lots and lots of your “typical” beach attractions, and we visit them too! We love visiting the arcade on the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk, riding rides, dinning, and shopping at Broadway at the Beach and riding go-karts at Broadway Grand Prix. If you’re planning a visit, I highly recommend (if you’re able) visiting right before prime summer season (late May-early June) there are less people, often great weather, and more opportunities to enjoy the area.
Have you ever been to Myrtle Beach?
