DIY Raw Hem Jeans

I’ll start this post off with a confession – I’ve been in a season of blah. Not to throw myself a pity party or anything like that, but you know what I mean? Just a season of not really loving anything in my closet, and really hating the rouge gray hair that’s started to grow out of my head.

So, I decided it was time for a hair appointment. Hair appointments solve everything, right?! My hair has lightened up quite a bit over the summer and I could use a rich, dark balayage – and some extra dye for my single gray hair. The anticipation of fresh hair on the horizon has been dragging me out of my season of blah, but not as much as these jeans that I decided to cut the bottoms off of one morning before work.

It all started in a rush, in my closet one more before work. I especially hate getting dressed for work, it makes me feel all kinds of blah. Mainly because I need to be dressed up a bit, but I also need/want my outfit to flow into my mom duties in the afternoon, it’s a hard balance sometimes. But a challenge I’m typically up for.

These jeans were still in my closet from the Nordstrom sale, and I had every intention of returning them because they were too long. There is something about trying on a pair of pants that are too long, it makes them look bad all over. But in a desperate running late for work attempt to just wear something, I decided to try them on one more time. This time, I cuffed the bottoms inside.

Then decided, you know what, I like these jeans. They already had a raw hem, so I decided to get brave and pulled out the scissors. Call me crazy, I chopped the bottom off of these $80 jeans with a pair of children’s scissors.

And you know what? These jeans suddenly made me feel good. The blah was gone. The children’s scissors pulled through.

The raw hem let me see the goodness that is these jeans. They hold their shape through several wears, and like all of my other Madewell jeans, they’re super flattering.

You maybe thought this was going to be a tutorial for how to achieve a raw hem on your pants, but I literally just folded them under to get the right length and cut them straight across. My husband thinks they’re going to thread apart, I think he’s wrong, we’ll see who wins that debate. If anything, I think they will get sweeter with time.

Major praise for the raw hem, it’s a trend I hope sticks around for some time, so I can get away with hemming other pants the lazy way.

Have you ever cut a raw hem on your jeans?
