Pretty much since middle school, with the exception of a few short haircuts here or there, I’ve worn my hair the same. Long layers, throw some curls in it, go about my business. Until last year I honestly didn’t even know how to french braid. Something about doing anything different to my hair makes me feel highly uncomfortable, like I feel like it will just fall out and result in a bad hair day, and we all know how those bad hair days go. Last month when I worked with TRESemmé and their new micro mist hairspray, they asked for a hairstyle every Tuesday for their #TresTuesdays on Instagram. They didn’t even really ask for the hair to be different, they just wanted a style every Tuesday – I took this as a challenge. It was time for this creature of habit to learn a few new tricks. So, first things first, I went to my Pinterest board I’ve been pinning hairstyles to for years, that never came to fruition, and started experimenting.
At first, there were a lot of fails, laughs from my husband (since I had to get his opinion on the back) and I’ll be honest, a little stress that I wouldn’t be able to pull off any of them. I had to use copious amounts of hairspray, a lot of patience and acceptance that my fine hair wasn’t going to look just like the pins I loved. In the end – I just barely pulled off three different styles, that were pretty much similar, I’ll be honest, but were a step forward for me.
The Pinterest Hair Challenge
First up, I shared my simple curls from this post. Nothing new, nothing fancy the same old Brooke of the last 20 years.
Next, I got crazy and pulled my hair half up. I know y’all, really challenging. I joke, but since my hair is fine, it’s hard to pull it up and not have a lot of spaces that show my scalp, so I had to be very strategic pulling it back. I used this pin as inspiration and finished it off with one of the velvet hair ties from J. Crew that I obsessed over around the holidays.
Then, I broke out the braids! Remember when I said I just learned how to french braid about a year ago? Yeah, I’m still not very good at it, but I’m always trying to get better! I used this pin as inspiration. I actually attempted what is done in that pin, but with my hair being so fine, it didn’t quite look the same, so I opted for braids instead. Again, I don’t have a ton of hair, so my braids never look full and voluminous, but I’ll take what I can get! I actually really liked this one, and will wear it more!
Last, I went with a half french braid. This style, I actually ended up loving, it really looks cute if you pull it up into a pony tail after too! I used this pin as inspiration. I’ll be honest, I ran out of time and had my son snap this picture last minute with my iPhone, so the quality isn’t the best.
It was fun giving myself a little challenge, and it helped me get creative and step out of my comfort zone! For what it’s worth, I used the mirco mist hair spray for every single one of the styles, and it held – that hairspray is legit!
