Happy Valentine’s Day girls! I don’t know about you, but today of all days, I try to look a little bit on the pretty side. I take a little extra time with my hair and makeup and of course you’re going to find me wearing some pink. Back to that hair, I have a love hate relationship with my hair. Don’t we all? My hair has no problems growing long, is soft and silky and I happen to like it’s natural color. However, it also fails to hold curls, create any sort of pretty braid and lacks major volume. My hair is fine – if your hair is fine too, this one’s for you.
You can probably tell from my blog posts, I prefer to curl my hair. Since my hair is fine, it tends to fall flat, so I’ve always felt that the curls give it a little something extra. Not that my curls are ever perfect or full of volume, because well, fine hair problems. But over the years I’ve found a few things that help it hold the curl. Get ya’ face shields out girls, it’s going to involve a lot of hairspray. I’m kidding…but not fully, hairspray is my secret weapon.
How to Get Lasting Curls in Fine Hair
First thing to note, my hair holds style a lot better in the summer than it does in the winter. The lack of moisture in the air just sticks my hair straight to my head. In the summer, I get the frizz and random curls around my face, but I can’t decided what’s worse; a few rouge baby curls, or lifeless hair, but onto those curls.
Blow Dry With a Round Brush
On most days, when it doesn’t matter to me if my hair is flat or not, I will messy dry my hair, or even let it air dry. However, if I’m going for volume, I break out my mousse and round brush. I’ve used so many different mousse brands over the years and am not very brand specific with any. In this post I was working with TRESemmé products (I even washed my hair with TRESemmé) and used a TRESemmé mousse that worked well. After blow drying I sprayed just a little bit of TRESemmé Compressed Micro-Mist Hair Spray level 1 on my roots to keep them lifted.

Texturize
Since my hair is so soft and fine, I can get good results from a little texture spray before I curl it. This is another product I’m not brand specific on, any sea salt spray will do. I only spray it lightly since I’m going for light texture to hold curl vs full blown beach waves.

Keep The Curls Tight
I love loose curls, I envy the girls that can get that look with a larger barrel iron and keep it, but my hair just doesn’t handle that style well. Since it tends to fall flat, I go for the tighter 1″ barrel on my curling wand. My curls always fall loose, so even though the 1″ makes a tighter curl, it ends up being somewhat wavy on my hair. I like the look of laying the hair flat on the iron most of the time. In the past when I styled my hair in more of a beach wave style (when it was a little shorter) I would twist my hair, then wrap it. Since I use a smaller iron, I also don’t curl all the way up to my scalp. I feel like I look like Shirley Temple when I do that. So, I just curl up to ear height basically. To get a little more lift, I will sometimes curl the top pieces around the back of my hair to the top, but stay away from my face.
Spray Each Curl
Now onto that hairspray. Not like you want to drown yourself in a cloud of hairspray – but when your hair is fine like mine, the more hold, the better! I picked up TRESemmé Compressed Micro-Mist Hair Spray at Walmart in level 1 and 5 to try for this post and really like the results! The spray is compressed so it emits less gas when it’s sprayed and it keeps your hair soft, touchable and easy to brush. I spray each curl after I release it from the iron and then give myself a final spray at the end.
Keep Your Hands Off
I struggle with this, but the more I run my hands through my hair, the flatter it goes! I had side swept bangs for years, so now that I’ve grown my hair out, the pieces in the front drive me crazy! I probably put my hands through that part of my hair 100s of times a day. Sadly, it also makes that part of my hair oily and flat. Boo! I’m always trying to remind myself to just leave it alone.

At the end of the day, my curls still struggle, but if I can give them a little bit of hold, I’m happy! Check out the video to see my curls in actions – and just go ahead and ignore the lint in the armpits of my shirt. I videod the whole thing then saw the lint and was like surrrriousssslyyy, so I just left it. Y’all enjoy!

Do you struggle with fine hair too? What do you use to hold curl?
