My hospital makeup bag is pretty streamlined. Having a baby is a beautiful and exciting experience, but also a not so pretty experience. So, I personally wanted to have a few items on hand to help me feel a little ‘prettier’ during a not so pretty time. With my first baby, I packed these same staple items and was so thankful to have them!
Although this post is about my hospital makeup bag in particular, it’s great for any streamlined bag, maybe for a beach trip where you won’t be wearing a ton of makeup or a just in case bag you keep in your car.

1. Lilly Pulitzer Makeup Bag
Because duh, a cute bag is a must. No, not really, but if you’re anything like me, cute luggage and bags just make me happy.
2. The Wet Brush Squirt Pink
You’re going to need a little brush, with lying in a bed for hours upon hours and then of course, being in total pain, you’re sure to create quite the mop on your head. I personally love this brand of brush in both the big and little version, it doesn’t pull on tangles which reduces breakage and of course makes for a comfortable brushing.
3. Eos Lip Balm Smooth Sphere
Laying in a bed, in pain, eating ice chips, for hours and you’re likely to get chapped lips. A good lip balm is a must.
4. SMASHBOX Camera Ready BB Cream
For me, BB Cream is something I tend to wear mostly under my foundation, but when I’m in a hurry or in a situation where I don’t need a ton of makeup on, like being in the hospital, it’s the perfect amount of coverage. Smashbox, is my favorite of the ones I’ve tried.
5. Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes Refill Pack
For when you’re too tired/in too much pain to get up and wash your face.
6. Urban Decay ‘Naked Flushed’ Bronzer, Highlighter & Blush Palette
I love to highlight and contour. On any given day, I may not wear a ton of makeup, but I will always contour and highlight. This little compact makes it easy to have all three, a highlighter, blush and bronzer in one. Plus, Urban Decay has great colors and great lasting power.
7. Beautyblender – Original Beauty Blender
Beauty Blenders are new to me, I’ve saw them everywhere and heard countless rave reviews before I finally tried one for myself. Since, I can’t turn back. Whether you’re just putting on a light BB Cream or full blown concealer and foundation, it really does make for a smooth airbrushed finish.
8. Dior ‘Diorshow’ Mascara
Also, another staple and everyday wear for me, Diorshow mascara. At least if I’m wearing it lying around, it won’t turn all flaky and coon eyed on me.
9.Hair Ties
Yes, hair ties are necessary, unless you have short hair.
Now, if you’re a first time mom interested in what I’m packing in general for my hospital bag, I’ll share that too. I try to keep it pretty simple, the hospital provides a lot for you and really I’m not that picky.
In my hospital bag:
1. Sports Bras because they are comfortable. With my first baby they made me feel more covered up during and after delivery and worked great for nursing.
2. Robe, because you will have visitors and I personally feel more modest and comfortable in a cute robe.
3. Slippers, because hospital floors are gross. The hospital will give you sweet socks, but I like having my own slippers.
4. Comfortable clothes so I can feel human when people visit. This time around, I packed a button down sleep shirt I picked up at Old Navy, it looks nice and is still comfortable. I also added in a couple pairs of leggings.
5. A going home outfit that is still comfortable but looks human, this time around with my due date being in March, I chose a maternity t-shirt, for the stretch, leggings and a loose sweatshirt.
6. Hairdyer, I always feel better when I can dry my hair.
7. Makeup bag above, I also added my own soap and toiletries of course.
8. Personal items that you prefer. Again, the hospital will give you most everything you need in terms of after birth care, but if you have a preference, bring your own.
9. For the hubby and toddler tag alongs I added a change of comfortable clothes and a pillow and blanket so hubby can stay the night with me.
10. Snacks just in case the cafeteria is closed after you deliver, you will be starving and will want a snack.
Some people like to pack things like a towel of their own, magazines to read, headphones to listen to music, etc. Personally, I didn’t need any of that with my first delivery, but that’s personal preference.
For the baby:
1. A going home outfit. I just packed a couple of sleepers to choose from and a hat to keep him warm.
2. Boppy pillow
3. Breast Pump
4. Newborn diapers and wipes.
5. Vaseline and gauze (for newborn care of a baby boy)
6. Swaddle Blanket
7. Carrier ready in the car
The hospital will also give you things for the baby, like diapers and gauze, but I liked having some of my own things with my first baby.
I don’t think I’m forgetting anything, but we will see! What did you pack in your hospital bag?
