When it comes to the most elongating denim for petites, my top pick will always be flare jeans and bootcut jeans. These styles, once a staple in the early 2000s, have made a big comeback over the past few fall and winter seasons. With the right styling, flare, and bootcut jeans can create the illusion of longer legs—making them one of the most flattering denim cuts for petite women. In today’s post, I’m sharing three petite-friendly flare jean options along with simple styling tips to help you create the look of longer legs.

Flare Jeans for Petites: Styling Tips to Look Taller
My Sizing: I’m 4’10”, and my bust, waist, and hip measurements are 32″, 24″, and 36″. My inseam is 25″ (the measurement from the inside of my leg to my ankle bone). The clothes shown are unaltered and show how they fit me right from the store. I list my sizing beside each item to help you compare when shopping online. When referencing my true size, that is often the smallest option available at a brand or petite xxs/00/24. I wear a size 5 shoe.
Styling Tips to Look Taller in Flare Jeans for Petites
- Choose a longer inseam that works with low heels. If you want to appear taller, pick flare jeans that are slightly long so they look perfect with a low heel. I also love wearing flare jeans with flats—there’s an option in this post for that—but keep in mind flats won’t give the same elongating effect. It’s still a look I enjoy wearing, though!
- Choose a high-rise jean. A rise that hits at your belly button—whether true high-rise or mid-rise—will make you look taller.
- Wear neutral pointed-toe shoes. Pointed-toe shoes are a classic trick for petites—they elongate your legs and prevent your feet from disappearing under flared jeans. You don’t have to follow this rule all the time, but choosing shoes that are low-contrast with your jeans or skin will make you look taller. For dark wash jeans, try medium to dark boots or heels; for light wash jeans, go with medium to light boots or heels.
- Go nude. If you’re wearing shoes that show your skin, like ballet flats, choose a pair close to your skin tone. It doesn’t have to be exact, but low-contrast shoes help elongate your legs. That said, I still love wearing statement shoes—like red, leopard, or embellished styles. They may not lengthen your legs, but they’re fun! The nude tip is just for creating a longer leg line, not a rule you have to follow.
Petite Flare Jeans
Flare jeans often have longer inseams so they can be worn with heels. In this petite roundup, the jeans range from 27.5″ to 30″ inseams. One pair works well with flats, while the other two are best with a low 2″ heel.
J.Crew Bootcut
- Size Wearing: Petite 24 in Resin Rinse
- Fit: true to size
- Inseam: 29.5″ in petite 24 (inseam increases as size increases)
- Rise: 10.25″ in petite
- Fabric & Care: 94% cotton/4% polyester/2% Lycra® spandex. | machine washable
I first bought a pair of J.Crew bootcut jeans last fall, and they quickly became one of my most worn pairs of the season. In petite, these jeans have a 10.25″ rise and a 29.5″ inseam. A 29.5″ inseam is fairly long, even with heels, but I noticed last season that they shrank about 1″ to 1.5″ after washing and wearing. While there’s no guarantee this will happen for everyone, I wanted to give a heads-up about the fit. Fresh out of the package, the 29.5″ inseam buckles slightly at my feet but doesn’t drag when wearing a 2″ heel. Flare jeans are forgiving because of their shape—you can often wear them a little long, so don’t shy away from a longer inseam. Otherwise, these jeans fit true to size. You can see these jeans styled in my fall capsule wardrobe from last year.

Gap High Rise Relaxed Flare Jeans
- Size Wearing: Petite 24 in Dark Wash
- Fit: true to size
- Inseam: 29″ in petite
- Rise: 10″ in petite
- Fabric & Care: 86% recycled cotton 7% recycled polyester 6% elastane | machine washable
The Gap High Rise Relaxed Flare Jeans are fitted through the hips and thighs with a generous flare at the bottom. The 29″ inseam works well with a 2″ heel on my proportions. They have a bit of stretch, and I love the thick banding at the hem. These jeans run true to size, but if you want a looser, more relaxed fit like the model, I recommend sizing up.

J.Crew Charley Kickout Cropped Jean
- Size Wearing: 24 Classic in Rinse
- Fit: true to size – they’re snug at my hips and thighs, but loose in the waist, so a size up wouldn’t work
- Inseam: 27.5″ in classic | 25.5″ in petite
- Rise: 11.5 ” in classic | 10.5″ in petite
- Fabric & Care: 99% cotton/1% Lycra® spandex | machine washable
The Charley Kickout Cropped Jeans from J.Crew feature a high rise, a slim fit through the hips and thighs, and a medium flare leg. I own them in both petite and classic sizing. The petite version has a 25.5″ inseam and hits right at the top of my foot, while the classic version has a 27.5″ inseam and works perfectly as a full-length flare with flats. The jeans are made from 99% cotton and 1% spandex, so they have very little stretch. On me, they fit snug through the hips and thighs but leave some extra room at the waist. Over time, they loosen slightly, making them more comfortable in the thighs while still staying up despite the looser waist. I recommend going with your true size in this style. You can see the petite version styled in this post.
