When I’m packing for a vacation, I always look for pieces that can do more than one job. The less I have to pack, the better, especially when I can create several outfits from one item.

A white linen dress is a hard-working piece in a suitcase. It’s lightweight, breathable, and easy to style for everything from sightseeing to dinner. With just a few accessories and layering pieces, it can take you through an entire vacation.

For this post, I’m styling Athleta’s Retreat Linen Dress. It’s made from 100% linen and is fully lined, so it feels substantial without being heavy. One of my favorite things about it is the petite fit. While the silhouette is a little relaxed and voluminous, the length is just right on my 4’10” frame, making it easy to wear without alterations. For size reference, I’m wearing this dress in Petite XS. I also think this linen dress from Quince is a great option if the Athleta dress is sold out.

Here are four ways I’d wear this one dress on vacation.

My Sizing: I’m 4’10”, and my bust, waist, and hip measurements are 32″, 24″, and 36″. My inseam is 25″ (the measurement from the inside of my leg to my ankle bone). The clothes shown are unaltered and show how they fit me right from the store. I list my sizing beside each item to help you compare when shopping online. When referencing my true size, that is often the smallest option available at a brand or petite xxs/00/24. I wear a size 5 shoe.

1. Dinner

A white linen dress feels effortlessly elegant for vacation dinners.

For this look, I paired the dress with gold sandals and draped a silk scarf over my shoulders. The scarf adds a little warmth for breezy evenings while giving the outfit a polished feel without needing a jacket.

Simple gold jewelry and a small handbag are all you need to complete the look.

Why it works:

  • Lightweight but polished
  • Easy layer for cool evenings
  • Perfect for vacation dinners or sunset walks

2. Sightseeing

I swapped the sandals for a pair of low-profile sneakers and added a bag that can be worn on the shoulder or as a crossbody. I also layered a lightweight denim shirt over the dress, which works well for air-conditioned museums or cooler mornings.

The denim shirt is completely optional, but it adds another layer without feeling bulky. It could also be swapped for a cardigan if you wanted to elevate the outfit a bit.

Why it works:

  • Comfortable for walking
  • Bag can be worn crossbody to go hands free
  • Easy layer if temperatures change throughout the day

3. Shopping Around Town

One of my favorite things about a white linen dress is how easily it can be dressed up or down.

For a day of shopping, I brought back the gold sandals from the dinner outfit and added a cropped red cardigan for a fun pop of color. The cropped length helps define the waist while balancing the relaxed silhouette of the dress. It can be worn on the shoulders if its warm outdoors but put on for a lunch break or in and out of air conditioned stores.

A crossbody bag keeps everything practical while you’re browsing shops or stopping for lunch.

Why it works:

  • Comfortable but polished
  • Bright pop of color
  • Great for shopping, lunch, or casual dinners

4. Pool or Beach Cover-Up

A linen dress might not be the first thing you think of as a cover-up, but this one works beautifully. I like to wear an active romper over my swimsuit for casual days on the boat, at the waterpark, and on beach days, but when it comes to a resort pool, I like to look a little more polished.

The relaxed fit makes it easy to throw on over a swimsuit, and because it’s made from breathable 100% linen, it stays comfortable even on hot afternoons. The fully lined fabric provides enough coverage to comfortably head from the pool to lunch without changing.

It’s one of those pieces that makes packing easier because it serves multiple purposes throughout your trip.

Why it works:

  • Lightweight and breathable
  • Easy to throw on over a swimsuit
  • Perfect for pool days, beach vacations, or resort wear

Final Thoughts

If you’re trying to pack lighter, a white linen dress is one of the most versatile pieces you can bring. It works just as well for sightseeing as it does for dinner, shopping, or spending the afternoon by the pool.

I especially love this Athleta linen dress because the petite proportions make it easy to wear right off the rack. The length is just right, it’s fully lined, and the classic design makes it easy to style with pieces you probably already own.

Wherever you’re headed a white linen dress is the kind of piece you’ll reach for again and again.
