One of the questions I’m often asked is how to wear boots to work. Boots can absolutely look polished in the office, and in today’s post, I’m sharing four petite-friendly outfit ideas.

When it comes to pairing boots with workwear, I keep two things in mind:

  1. Choose boots that resemble heels. A pointed toe and slimmer heel (even if low) will always look more polished than a chunky style. I also look for a slim shaft that fits close to the ankle so it can tuck neatly under pants.
  2. Choose full-length pants. Wide leg, flare, or bootcut trousers drape beautifully over boots. Straight-leg pants can also work if the hem reaches the top of the foot and has a wider opening. Slim ankle pants are less seamless with boots.

With that in mind, here are four work-ready outfits with boots, all petite-friendly.

Work Outfits with Boots for Petites

My Sizing: I’m 4’10”, and my bust, waist, and hip measurements are 32″, 24″, and 36″. My inseam is 25″ (the measurement from the inside of my leg to my ankle bone). The clothes shown are unaltered and show how they fit me right from the store. I list my sizing beside each item to help you compare when shopping online. When referencing my true size, that is often the smallest option available at a brand or petite xxs/00/24. I wear a size 5 shoe.

Boots for Work

I’m wearing the Stevie Boots from J.Crew in cognac suede and black leather in the outfits below. They have a pointed toe and a comfortable low heel that feels polished without being too high. I’m also linking a few similar, more affordable styles below.

Wide Leg Trousers with Suede Boots

For the first look, I paired the Hayden Wide Leg Pants from Banana Republic Factory in Auburn Brown with suede ankle boots. The Hayden pants have a flattering flat front and a comfortable stretch waistband. In petite sizing, they come with a 29″ inseam—perfect for wearing with heeled boots.

Black Wide Legs with Leather Boots

Next up, I styled black leather boots with the Essential Wide Leg Pants from J.Crew. These pants have a pleated front but are cut in such a way that they don’t add volume through the hips—a win for petites. They’re true to size and in petite they have a 29.5″ inseam that bunches a little bit on me with a low heeled pair of boots.

To balance the look, I added a draped top from Banana Republic Factory. The movement of the top complements the structure of the pants while keeping the outfit work-appropriate.

Navy Pants and Blazer with Suede Boots

For my third look, I returned to suede boots—this time paired with the Perfect Wide Leg Pants from Ann Taylor in night sky. These have a slim, flat-front style that my readers often ask for. They’re true to size overall, but a little bit snug through the hips, so you may want to opt for the curvy fit or go for a size up if that is a fit issue for you. In petite, they have a 28.5″ inseam.

I layered the look with a J.Crew blazer in the video, but didn’t photograph it (linked below).

Black and Tan with Leather Boots

For the last outfit, I styled a classic black and tan combination. I paired black leather boots with the Sloan Trousers from Banana Republic Factory in brown. The Sloan pants have a  28.25″ inseam in short—just right for pairing with boots.

To finish the look, I added a black cardigan from Banana Republic Factory.

Boots can absolutely work in professional settings for petites. Look for slimmer-heeled, pointed-toe boots with a narrow shaft, and pair them with full-length wide leg, flare, or bootcut trousers. The result is elongating, petite-friendly, and office-ready.
