If you’re looking for ways to wear boots to work this fall and winter, I have a few tips for you! In this post, I’m sharing the styles of pants and boots I think pair best together, along with a few outfit ideas you can wear to the office.

How to Style Boots with Workwear for Petites
My Sizing: I’m 4’10”, and my bust, waist, and hip measurements are 32″, 24″, and 36″. My inseam is 25″ (the measurement from the inside of my leg to my ankle bone). The clothes shown are unaltered and show how they fit me right from the store. I list my sizing beside each item to help you compare when shopping online. When referencing my true size, that is often the smallest option available at a brand or petite xxs/00/24. I wear a size 5 shoe.
1. Choose the Right Pants
The first thing I consider when styling boots with workwear is the length and shape of my pants. My goal is to choose a full-length style that allows the boots to tuck neatly underneath the hem, creating a clean, uninterrupted line.
There are three styles I recommend:
Full-Length Wide-Leg Pants
Wide-leg trousers are one of my favorite options for wearing with boots. Look for a pair that comes all the way to the floor and gathers slightly at your feet when you’re barefoot. This gives you enough length to wear them with heeled boots without looking too short. A style to try.
Full-Length Flare Pants
If you prefer a slimmer fit, flare pants are another great option. They offer a closer fit through the hips and thighs but have enough room at the bottom to comfortably fit over your boots. I recommend the same length as wide-leg pants, coming to the floor with a slight gather when barefoot. A style to try.
Relaxed Straight-Leg Pants
You can also wear boots with relaxed straight-leg trousers. Look for a pair with a wider leg opening that falls close to the top of your foot. You want enough room for the boots to fit underneath without catching on the hem or creating bulk.
I would avoid slim or cropped pants for these particular outfits. While you can certainly style boots with both, they don’t create the same clean line I’m going for here. Cropped pants can leave an awkward gap between the hem and the top of your boots, while slim pants may catch on the boots instead of falling smoothly over them. A style to try.
2. Choose Dressy Boots
The second thing I consider is the style of my boots. For workwear, I prefer boots that resemble a classic pair of heels rather than casual, chunky boots.
I look for a streamlined shape, an elongated toe, and a dressy heel. Pointed-toe boots are my favorite because they visually extend the leg, especially when worn under full-length trousers. However, if pointed-toe shoes aren’t comfortable for you, an elongated square toe or a slightly elongated rounded toe can create a similar effect.
Your boots don’t need to have a high heel, either. A low heel or kitten heel can look just as polished. I would avoid chunky, casual stacked heels and instead look for a slim heel or one wrapped in the same leather or suede as the boots. This creates a dressier appearance that pairs nicely with tailored pants.
I also prefer boots that fit relatively close to the ankle. Although most of the boots will be hidden under your pants, a streamlined fit helps prevent excess bulk underneath the fabric.

3. Work Outfit Ideas with Boots
Once you have the right combination of pants and boots, styling them for work is simple. I like to keep the rest of my outfits classic, with tailored pieces that complement the dressier style of the boots.

Final Thoughts
When styling boots with workwear, I think the key is choosing pants with enough length and room to fall smoothly over your boots. Whether you prefer wide-leg, flare, or relaxed straight-leg trousers, the goal is to create a clean line without bunching around the ankles.
Pair your pants with dressy boots that have a streamlined shape and a refined heel, and you can easily transition many of your favorite work outfits into the cooler months.
