Knee-high boots are one of my favorite shoes to wear in the fall and winter with skirts and dresses. I love pairing them with dresses and skirts, and I don’t limit myself to just one length. From mini dresses to midi and maxi skirts, there are plenty of ways to style them. As a petite, I do pay attention to proportions when putting these outfits together. In this post, I’m sharing how I style knee-high boots with different dress and skirt lengths, along with a few tips for creating a leg-lengthening look.

How to Wear Knee-High Boots with Dresses and Skirts for Petites
My Sizing: I’m 4’10”, and my bust, waist, and hip measurements are 32″, 24″, and 36″. My inseam is 25″ (the measurement from the inside of my leg to my ankle bone). The clothes shown are unaltered and show how they fit me right from the store. I list my sizing beside each item to help you compare when shopping online. When referencing my true size, that is often the smallest option available at a brand or petite xxs/00/24. I wear a size 5 shoe.
Choosing Knee-High Boots for Petites
Finding knee-high boots for petites is no easy task! I’ll have a review of some of my favorite options in an upcoming post, but there are a few things I typically look for when shopping for boots.
First, I prefer boots with a slim shaft that fits close to my calves rather than loose or slouchy styles. I find that a closer fit creates a cleaner line and looks more balanced on my petite frame.
Shaft height is another important consideration. Many petites can wear boots with a shaft height under 15″, but that measurement will vary depending on your individual proportions. I recommend measuring your legs and comparing those measurements to the shaft height listed for the boots you’re considering.

Choosing the Right Boot Color
Another thing I consider when styling knee-high boots is color, especially when I’m wearing them with shorter dresses and skirts.
If your goal is a look of longer legs when wearing knee-high boots with bare legs, choose a color that’s close to your skin tone. The lower contrast creates a longer visual line on a petite frame.

Neither combination is wrong here but I think it gives a good visual of how the color can change the overall proportions.

When I wear darker boots, I’ll often pair them with tights in a similar color. This creates the same continuous line without the contrast between my legs and boots.

Of course, this is just a suggestion and not a rule (I’m not a fan of rules). Keeping the look low-contrast with your legs will help add a little visual length, but it’s not required.
How to Wear Knee-High Boots with Mini Dresses and Skirts
Above-the-knee dresses and skirts are one of the easiest styles to pair with knee-high boots.
For my 4’10” frame, I typically aim for a dress or skirt that hits at least 1″ above my knees. This leaves a little bit of leg showing between the hem and the boots.

The dress or skirt doesn’t have to be fitted, either. While a slim-fitting mini dress looks great with knee-high boots, I also love pairing them with fuller skirts and swing dresses. The shorter length helps balance the extra volume, while the boots give the outfit a polished fall look.

If you’re looking for an extra leg-lengthening effect, this is where choosing boots close to your skin tone or matching darker boots with tights can make a difference.
How to Wear Knee-High Boots with Midi Dresses and Skirts
Midi dresses and skirts can be a little trickier to style with knee-high boots, especially for petites. Depending on where the hem falls, a midi dress can create a strong horizontal line across your calves that visually shortens your legs.
There are two ways I like to style midi dresses and skirts to create a little extra length.
1. Choose a Fitted Midi Dress
One option is to choose a more fitted midi dress. A dress that follows the shape of your body creates a streamlined silhouette and helps balance the coverage of the longer skirt and tall boots.
I particularly like this combination with a slim pair of knee-high boots rather than a loose or slouchy style. Keeping both pieces streamlined creates a clean look from top to bottom.

2. Choose a Midi Dress or Skirt with a Front Slit
My other favorite option is to choose a midi dress or skirt with a front slit. This is a great way to break up the horizontal line created by the midi hem and add a little visual length.
Button-front dresses and skirts work especially well for this. If I’m wearing a button-front midi dress, I’ll often leave the bottom buttons undone up to my knees to create a front slit.
Your legs won’t continuously show, and they don’t need to. As you walk or sit, the opening creates a longer visual line that breaks up the hem at your calves. It’s a simple styling trick that can make a big difference in how a midi dress looks with knee-high boots.

How to Wear Knee-High Boots with Maxi Dresses and Skirts
Maxi dresses and skirts are another easy pairing with knee-high boots. Unlike midi dresses, you don’t have to worry as much about where the hem falls on your calves because the longer length creates a continuous line.
I love wearing knee-high boots underneath maxi dresses and skirts in the fall and winter. It looks great and it’s warm too.
One thing I pay attention to with this combination is balancing the outfit. Tall boots can add a little extra visual weight to the bottom half of a dress, especially when paired with a fuller maxi skirt.
To balance that weight, I’ll often add a belt that matches my boots. This brings the color of the boots into the upper half of the outfit, defines my waist, and makes everything feel a little more balanced.

For me, it’s all about paying attention to proportions. I prefer slim-fitting boots with a petite-friendly shaft height, shorter hemlines with mini dresses, and front slits or streamlined silhouettes with midi dresses. With maxi dresses, I like adding a coordinating belt to balance the outfit.
Of course, these are just the styling tricks I use when I want to create a little extra length on my 4’10” frame. They’re not rules you have to follow to wear knee-high boots.
I’ll be sharing an updated review of petite-friendly knee-high boots soon, including some of my favorite options for shorter legs and slim calves.
