We’ve made it to the final post in this year’s petite-friendly teacher outfit series! Throughout the series, I’ve shared business casual outfits, casual classroom looks, and comfortable sneaker outfits inspired by the requests I receive from my teacher readers every year.
To wrap things up, I wanted to focus on dresses and skirts. They’re some of the easiest pieces to reach for on busy mornings because they require very little styling, but I know many of my teacher readers have a few must-haves when shopping for them. Sleeves (or easy layering options), comfortable fits, practical lengths, and pockets whenever possible all make a big difference for a long day in the classroom.
Here are four petite-friendly dresses and skirts that check many of those boxes.

My Sizing: I’m 4’10”, and my bust, waist, and hip measurements are 32″, 24″, and 36″. My inseam is 25″ (the measurement from the inside of my leg to my ankle bone). The clothes shown are unaltered and show how they fit me right from the store. I list my sizing beside each item to help you compare when shopping online. When referencing my true size, that is often the smallest option available at a brand or petite xxs/00/24. I wear a size 5 shoe.
Outfit 1: Printed Midi Skirt + Ribbed Top
The first outfit features this beautiful printed midi skirt from J.Crew Factory.
The skirt is unlined, but not sheer, has pockets, and features a comfortable stretch waistband that makes it easy to wear all day. Although it comes in petite sizing, I actually chose the standard length because I wanted a little more length on my 4’10” frame. If you’re petite and prefer a true midi length, I’d recommend trying both lengths to see which you prefer.
I’m wearing my usual XXS, and I’d say it fits true to size.
I paired it with a yellow ribbed top from Banana Republic Factory in XXS.

Outfit 2: J.Crew Factory Cotton Midi Dress
If you’re looking for an easy one-and-done outfit, this cotton midi dress from J.Crew Factory is a great option.
One of my favorite things about this dress is that it has sleeves and pockets—two features I know many teachers specifically look for. It also fits petites beautifully without feeling overwhelming.
I’m wearing a Petite 00, and I’d say it runs true to size.
The dress is unlined, so I would recommend adding a lightweight slip for a little extra coverage, especially if you’ll be spending time outside in bright sunlight.

Outfit 3: Gingham Midi Skirt + Layered Cardigan
For the third outfit, I styled another midi skirt from J.Crew Factory, this time in a classic gingham print.
I chose the petite version for this outfit, but after trying it on, I actually think I would have preferred the standard length. The petite still fits well overall, but I’d personally like just a little more length.
The skirt runs true to size, but there are a few things worth noting. It’s unlined, so I would recommend adding a slip for extra coverage. It also doesn’t have pockets, and the buttons down the front are decorative rather than functional.
I paired it with a sleeveless top layered under a lightweight cardigan. It’s a combination that works especially well for teachers because you can stay cool outdoors while still having sleeves indoors when the classroom air conditioning is running.

Outfit 4: Chambray Willa Dress
If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you’ve probably seen me mention the Willa dress before. It’s one of my favorite dress silhouettes from J.Crew Factory because it’s consistently well proportioned for petites.
This chambray version is no exception. It fits beautifully right off the rack with a flattering shape and comfortable fit that’s easy to wear throughout the school day.
The dress is unlined, but I didn’t find it to be sheer. I’m wearing my usual Petite 00, and I’d say it’s true to size.
It’s an easy dress to wear on its own during warmer weather, and when the temperatures cool down, simply add a cardigan or lightweight jacket to transition it into fall.
