Field jackets are one of my favorite layers for fall. They’re perfect for that time of year when you want to start adding layers and dressing for the season, but it’s not quite cold enough for a heavy coat. They’re easy to throw on over everything from sweaters and jeans to dresses, and I always like to have at least one in my fall wardrobe.

For this post, I’m sharing three field jackets that work well on my 4’10” frame. Each one has a different fit, from a cropped jacket in standard sizing to a true petite option and a longer chore jacket that works for petites with a little styling. Depending on the fit and level of warmth you’re looking for, there’s something a little different about each one.

My Sizing: I’m 4’10”, and my bust, waist, and hip measurements are 32″, 24″, and 36″. My inseam is 25″ (the measurement from the inside of my leg to my ankle bone). The clothes shown are unaltered and show how they fit me right from the store. I list my sizing beside each item to help you compare when shopping online. When referencing my true size, that is often the smallest option available at a brand or petite xxs/00/24. I wear a size 5 shoe.

Madewell The Billie Short Jacket

If you’re looking for an on-trend field jacket with petite-friendly proportions, the Billie Short Jacket from Madewell is my pick. Although it comes in standard sizing, the cropped length works really well on my petite frame. I’m wearing it in XXS and love the fit.

The jacket has a swing shape with a pleat in the back, giving it a more voluminous fit. I personally love the shape, but if you prefer your jackets to have a slim, streamlined fit, this may be one you want to skip.

The sleeves are meant to be cuffed and have a corduroy trim that coordinates with the corduroy around the collar. Because cuffing the sleeves is part of the design, they work well for me without looking like I’m simply trying to make long sleeves fit.

This is also the only lined jacket of the three. It’s not a heavy coat, but the lining makes it the warmest option in this roundup. It’s made from a cotton and nylon blend and is machine washable.

I chose the Sepia color, which is a great neutral for fall, but it also comes in navy, burgundy, and green. I love the color and fit of this jacket so much I think it’s going to be a capsule pick.

J.Crew Factory Petite Field Jacket

The J.Crew Factory Field Jacket is the only true petite option in this roundup. Of the three, this is the one I would choose if you’re looking for a classic, streamlined field jacket with sleeves that are the right length straight from the store.

I’m wearing Petite XXS and love the fit. It has enough room for me to comfortably layer it over a sweater without feeling like I’m lost in the jacket. It’s 100% cotton and has both a button and zipper closure along with corduroy trim around the collar.

This jacket is unlined and lightweight, making it a good option for mild fall days or for layering over warmer pieces as the temperatures start to drop.

My only wish is that it came in more neutral solid colors. I love the color I’m wearing, but it makes a little more of a statement than a traditional neutral field jacket. It also comes in navy and a green plaid option.

Quince Organic Cotton Chore Jacket

If you prefer a slightly longer jacket, the Quince Organic Cotton Chore Jacket is another option that can work well for petites. This one comes in standard sizing, and I’m wearing XS. I love the fit overall, but I do need to cuff the sleeves.

It’s made from 97% organic cotton twill with 3% spandex and has enough room in the XS for me to layer it over larger sweaters. Unlike the other two jackets, this one doesn’t have any corduroy details, giving it more of a simple chore-jacket look.

It’s also unlined and wears almost like a heavy shirt. I would consider this more of an added layer for mild temperatures than a jacket that provides much warmth.

I’m wearing the Rust color, which feels like a fresh change from the olive green you often see in this style. It also comes in six other neutral color options, so this one gives you the most variety if you’re looking for a particular color for your wardrobe.

Which Field Jacket Is Best for Petites?

All three jackets work on my 4’10” frame, but they each offer something different. The Madewell Billie is my pick for a cropped, current silhouette and a little extra warmth. The J.Crew Factory jacket has the most traditionally petite fit, with a streamlined shape and sleeves that fit me perfectly. The Quince jacket is a good choice if you prefer a longer chore style and don’t mind cuffing the sleeves.
