Quilted jackets are another fall layer I look forward to pulling out once the temperatures start to cool down. They have a classic look that works well with a casual fall wardrobe, but depending on the weight and length, they can serve very different purposes.

For this post, I’m sharing three quilted jackets that work on my 4’10” frame, ranging from a lightweight cropped style to a classic hip-length jacket and a longer option with a little more warmth. While two of these jackets come in petite sizing, you’ll notice I still need to cuff the sleeves on both. I’ll share more about the fit of each one along with which jacket I would choose depending on the weather and the amount of coverage you’re looking for.

My Sizing: I’m 4’10”, and my bust, waist, and hip measurements are 32″, 24″, and 36″. My inseam is 25″ (the measurement from the inside of my leg to my ankle bone). The clothes shown are unaltered and show how they fit me right from the store. I list my sizing beside each item to help you compare when shopping online. When referencing my true size, that is often the smallest option available at a brand or petite xxs/00/24. I wear a size 5 shoe.

Ann Taylor Petite Weekend Corduroy Trim Quilted Jacket

The Petite Weekend Corduroy Trim Quilted Jacket from Ann Taylor has the most classic look of the three. It hits around the hips and has traditional quilted details along with corduroy trim at the collar. I also love the classic green and blue color combination and the gold buttons.

This jacket isn’t lined, but the quilting feels lightly insulated. I would choose this one for mild fall weather when you want a little warmth without moving into a heavier coat.

I’m wearing my true size, Petite XXS, but the jacket runs large. The overall fit is roomy on me, and even in petite sizing, the sleeves are long enough that I need to cuff them. If you’re able to size down and prefer a closer fit, you may want to do that. However, the roomier fit does give you space to layer a sweater underneath.

Of the three, this is my pick if you’re looking for a traditional quilted jacket you can wear throughout fall.

Banana Republic Factory Quilted Cropped Jacket

If you love the look of a quilted jacket but don’t necessarily need the added warmth, the Quilted Cropped Jacket from Banana Republic Factory is a great lightweight option.

This jacket has a cropped, collarless design that gives it a slightly more modern look than the classic quilted jacket from Ann Taylor. It’s unlined and doesn’t feel insulated, so I wouldn’t choose this one specifically to keep me warm. Instead, I see it as a lightweight layer that gives an outfit a fall look without adding a lot of heat.

I’m wearing Petite XXS, and the fit is oversized on me. The sleeves are also long, even in petite sizing, so I need to cuff them. I like the combination of the oversized shape and cropped length because you get the relaxed fit without having a jacket that’s long and overwhelming on a petite frame.

This would be the jacket I reach for earliest in the season when the weather is still fairly warm but I’m ready to start adding fall layers to my outfits.

Quince Featherless Quilted Long Puffer Jacket

For the most warmth and coverage of the three, I would choose the Featherless Quilted Long Puffer Jacket from Quince. I purchased this jacket last year, and it quickly sold out in the Redwood Brown shade I’m wearing.

This jacket reminds me of a more expensive J.Crew coat from years past. It has a cocoon shape with a stand collar and a longer length that gives you more coverage through the body. It’s a medium-weight option that I find perfect for the transitional weather we get in fall and spring.

I’m wearing XS, and although this jacket only comes in standard sizing, the body fits me well. The sleeves are long, but with this particular style, I cuff them under instead of rolling them over. That keeps the sleeve looking clean and works well for me without alterations.

I get a lot of wear out of this jacket throughout the fall and into winter, especially with casual outfits. I often pair it with jeans or leggings when I want something warmer than a light fall jacket but don’t need a heavy winter coat.

Choosing a Quilted Jacket for Fall

The best option really comes down to when and how you plan to wear it. If you’re mostly looking for a jacket that adds a fall feel to your outfit without adding much warmth, I would choose the cropped Banana Republic Factory jacket. The Ann Taylor jacket falls in the middle with its classic hip length and lightly insulated feel. For cooler days when you want more warmth and coverage, the longer Quince jacket is my pick.
