There are certain outfit combinations I look forward to wearing every fall. Sometimes it’s the return of a favorite jacket or sweater, and other times it’s a newer style I’m excited to work into my wardrobe. This year, I’m especially looking forward to relaxed denim and pants, lightweight layers, rich fall colors, and a few accessories that make even a simple outfit feel a little more interesting.

Today I’m sharing four petite fall outfit combinations I can’t wait to wear this season. There are a few trends mixed in, including barrel pants and boat shoes, but each outfit still feels wearable and easy to recreate with pieces you may already have in your wardrobe. As always, everything is shown on me at 4’10” so you can get an idea of the proportions and lengths on a petite frame.

My Sizing: I’m 4’10”, and my bust, waist, and hip measurements are 32″, 24″, and 36″. My inseam is 25″ (the measurement from the inside of my leg to my ankle bone). The clothes shown are unaltered and show how they fit me right from the store. I list my sizing beside each item to help you compare when shopping online. When referencing my true size, that is often the smallest option available at a brand or petite xxs/00/24. I wear a size 5 shoe.

Chino Barrel Pants + Cotton Sweater + Ballet Flats

Say what you will about barrel pants, but they’re growing on me. Not the overly dramatic bowed-out styles, but the subtle tapered versions you can find from time to time. I actually find that shape to be flattering on my wider, pear-shaped hips. And no, you don’t have to stand with a leg pop to make them look good.

For this outfit, I styled a pair of chino barrel pants from J.Crew Factory with a chunky cotton sweater from Madewell. The pants are made from 97% cotton and 3% elastane and have a 25″ inseam in petite sizing. They hit right around my ankle bone, which feels like just the right length for this style.

The pants run large. I’m wearing Petite 24, and they’re still loose and relaxed on me. If you prefer a closer fit, I would size down.

The sweater is 100% cotton, and it’s one of those pieces I probably never would have purchased based on how it looked online. Then I saw it in the store and loved the fit. Although it’s chunky and oversized, it has a cropped length that keeps it well proportioned on my petite frame. I’m wearing XXS.

I layered a denim jacket from Quince over the sweater. I’m wearing XS, and while the jacket isn’t technically designed to be oversized, it fits that way on me and gives me the relaxed look I was going for.

I finished the outfit with chocolate brown ballet flats from Madewell and carried the brown through the outfit with a coordinating tote. I tied a scarf around the handle of the bag to pull the colors together and add a little more interest to the outfit.

Wide-Leg Jeans + Boat Shoes + Polo Top

Are boat shoes the next ballet flats? Probably not, but they continue to be a trend this season after making a comeback last year. I personally love them, especially with wide-leg jeans.

The wide-leg jeans in this outfit are from J.Crew Factory. In petite sizing, they have a 28″ inseam and a high 10.5″ rise. The leg is a little wider than J.Crew Factory’s Slim Wide Jeans, which are another style I wear often.

I paired the jeans with a striped polo top, also from J.Crew Factory. I’m wearing XXS, and it has an oversized fit on me. The sleeves are actually a perfect length and don’t need to be pushed back or cuffed, but I love the way they look styled that way with the relaxed fit of the top.

I finished the outfit with boat shoes and a green suede bag. The bag picks up the green stripe in the polo while also bringing a rich texture and color into the outfit that feels perfect for fall.

This combination is a little bit preppy, a little bit relaxed, and an easy way to make wide-leg jeans feel different from the way I’ve styled them in seasons past.

Barrel Jeans + Quilted Jacket

I know barrel jeans aren’t everyone’s favorite, but again, they’re growing on me. The pair I’m wearing here is the Darted Barrel Jeans from Madewell, which I’ve also styled multiple ways in another post.

I find these jeans to fit true to size and really like their slimmer tapered shape. They give you the look of a barrel jean without having an overly exaggerated silhouette, which is what makes this particular pair work for me.

I brought back the same cotton Madewell sweater from the first outfit and layered a classic quilted jacket over it. The combination of the chunky cotton sweater and quilted jacket is exactly the kind of layering I’ve been looking forward to wearing once the weather cools down.

I finished the outfit with my chocolate brown ballet flats and a green suede bag.

Wide-Leg Jeans + Fall Top

For my last outfit, I went with a combination I’ve repeated over and over again: dark-wash wide-leg jeans with a lightweight top in a rich fall color.

It’s one of my favorite ways to start dressing for fall when the weather isn’t cooperating yet. You get the deeper colors and overall feel of a fall outfit without having to pile on heavy sweaters and jackets when it’s still warm outside.

The top I’m wearing is from Madewell, and I love the color for fall. It’s sheer, so I wear a camisole underneath it, and I also pin the chest for a little more coverage. I’m wearing XXS.

I kept the accessories similar to the first outfit, pairing the jeans with the same chocolate brown ballet flats and adding a scarf to my bag. I love using a scarf this way because it’s an easy way to tie the colors in an outfit together while adding a little interest to a simple jeans-and-top combination.

Petite Fall Outfit Ideas to Wear This Season

Looking at these four outfits, I can already see a few pieces that are going to be on repeat for me this fall. Chocolate brown ballet flats, relaxed denim, lightweight jackets, and rich fall colors are all high on my list. I’m even coming around to barrel pants and jeans—as long as the shape isn’t too exaggerated.

More than anything, these are the kinds of fall outfit combinations I love because they’re easy to adjust for the weather. You can wear the jeans and lightweight tops while it’s still warm, then add sweaters, denim jackets, and quilted layers as the temperatures start to drop.

I’m looking forward to mixing several of these pieces into my fall capsule wardrobe and finding even more ways to wear them throughout the season.
