20+ Business Casual Outfits for Petites from Just 10 Clothing Pieces

When I worked in healthcare administration, I didn’t have a lot to spend on clothes, but I still wanted to look polished every day. Instead of buying lots of trendy pieces, I focused on versatile classics that I could wear year after year and style in different ways. I’d invest in a few basic bottoms, then mix in tops that all coordinated, giving me what felt like an endless number of outfits without needing a huge closet.

That same approach inspired today’s capsule wardrobe. It includes just 10 clothing pieces that can be mixed and matched into 20+ business casual outfits. I originally built it around a few of the comfortable, budget-friendly pieces I shared in my recent teacher outfit series, then expanded it to create a capsule that works for a variety of business casual dress codes. Whether your office leans more casual or you need a polished look for meetings, these pieces can do both.

Since I focus on petite fashion, I built this capsule with petite proportions in mind. Every piece fits my 4’10” frame well without alterations, making it easy to create a polished work wardrobe straight off the rack.

To keep the accessories simple and streamlined, I styled every outfit with just two pairs of shoes: a pair of pointed-toe flats and a pair of pointed-toe heels. I also used two handbags, one belt, and a silk scarf throughout the capsule. Feel free to swap in your favorite accessories, but I wanted to show just how many outfits you can create without needing an overflowing closet.

My Sizing: I’m 4’10”, and my bust, waist, and hip measurements are 32″, 24″, and 36″. My inseam is 25″ (the measurement from the inside of my leg to my ankle bone). The clothes shown are unaltered and show how they fit me right from the store. I list my sizing beside each item to help you compare when shopping online. When referencing my true size, that is often the smallest option available at a brand or petite xxs/00/24. I wear a size 5 shoe.

Banana Republic Factory Navy Wide Leg Pants

These have quickly become one of my favorite full-length trousers. They fit true to size, and I’m wearing Petite 00. They are stretchy and comfortable. Plus, the 27.5″ inseam can be worn with flats.

Quince Ultra Stretch Ponte Cropped Wide Leg Pants

If comfort is your priority, these are hard to beat. They feel like wearing your favorite pair of leggings. They have an 11″ rise and a 24″ inseam in the Short length. I’m wearing 0 Short, and they fit true to size (although if you border on sizing, you may want to size up). The ponte knit makes them incredibly comfortable while still looking office appropriate.

Aritzia Twirl Pleated Skirt

A navy pleated skirt is versatile and classic. I sized up to an XS for the best fit. If you’re looking for a budget-friendly alternative, I’ve also linked a similar option from Amazon.

Tops

LOFT Wedge Sweater

This petite sweater has a soft tan background with a delicate white floral print that pairs beautifully with both navy and brown. I’m wearing Petite XXS, and it fits true to size.

Banana Republic Factory Green Elbow Sleeve Top

This top is a great basic for work. It’s double-lined, making it smooth and opaque, and the elbow-length sleeves give it a polished look. It tucks beautifully into skirts and trousers without adding bulk. I’m wearing XXS, and it fits true to size.

Quince Heather Oatmeal Cotton Cashmere Tank

This is one of the hardest-working pieces in the capsule. It looks polished enough to wear on its own but also layers beautifully under both cardigans. I’m wearing XS, and it fits true to size.

J.Crew Factory Sleeveless Cotton Poplin Top

Although this top is offered in petite sizing, I actually prefer the standard XXS. The petite version felt tighter across my chest, while the standard fits comfortably without looking oversized.

Quince Short Sleeve Cashmere Sweater

The soft vintage pink color adds just enough color to this mostly neutral capsule. It fits true to size in XS. The neckline is a little low for me to wear on its own to work, but it layers beautifully.

Quince Navy Cashmere Cardigan

This cardigan is one of the most versatile pieces in the collection. Wear it open over tanks and sleeveless tops or fully buttoned as a sweater. I’m wearing XS, and it fits true to size.

Quince Heather Oatmeal Cotton Cashmere Cardigan

Another piece that works double duty. I wear it both as a cardigan and buttoned as a sweater. The body fits me well in XS, though I do cuff the sleeves since they’re a little long on my frame.

Why These Pieces Work Together

One thing I love about this capsule is how cohesive the color palette is. Navy, chocolate brown, soft green, tan, white, and vintage pink all mix effortlessly, allowing nearly every top to pair with every bottom.

There’s also plenty of variety in the silhouettes. You have a full-length wide leg trouser, a cropped ponte pant, and a pleated skirt, while the tops include lightweight sweaters, polished knit tops, layering pieces, and sleeveless options. That variety helps the outfits feel different, even though you’re working with a small wardrobe.

The pointed-toe shoes work especially well for petites, helping visually elongate the legs while pairing easily with both trousers and skirts. Adding a scarf or switching handbags is often all it takes to make an outfit feel completely different.
