I’ve been trying and reviewing petite jeans for years, but this year I want to take those reviews a step further. Instead of simply sharing my first impressions and personal experiences, I’m taking a closer look at what actually makes a pair of jeans wear well, last longer, and truly work for a petite frame.
While I’ve always shared my experience with each pair, it can be difficult to say exactly how much a pair of jeans stretches or shrinks if you’re not fully paying attention from the very beginning. So from now on, when I review petite jeans, I’ll be tracking several key details: how they fit on the first try, how they wear throughout a full day with before and after videos, and how much they shrink in the wash—complete with measurements.
This process will take a little longer, and some reviews may start with my initial impressions and be updated later. I’ll always let you know when it’s a first try. My goal is to give you a more comprehensive look at each pair so you can find the best petite jeans that truly hold up over time.
After just one week of testing, I’ve already noticed a pattern: the jeans in my closet that tend to hold their shape the best are those with a high cotton content—the more cotton, the better (at least so far). So in this post, I’m putting four pairs of petite-friendly jeans to the test, all with cotton content ranging from 96% to 100%, to see how they fit, wear, and shrink after washing.

Petite Jeans Review: Testing Cotton Denim for Stretch, Shrinkage, and Fit
My Sizing: I’m 4’10”, and my bust, waist, and hip measurements are 32″, 24″, and 36″. My inseam is 25″ (the measurement from the inside of my leg to my ankle bone). The clothes shown are unaltered and show how they fit me right from the store. I list my sizing beside each item to help you compare when shopping online. When referencing my true size, that is often the smallest option available at a brand or petite xxs/00/24. I wear a size 5 shoe.

Aritzia Farrah Hi-Rise Jeans
The Farrah Hi-Rise Jeans from Aritzia are a popular rigid denim style that also comes in a short length option, making them a potential fit for petites. Since these jeans are made from 100% cotton denim, I wanted to see how they perform over time. In this review, I’m testing the fit, wear, and shrinkage of the Farrah jeans in 24 Short in the 5 Yrs Kiss n Tell wash, including measurements before and after washing to see how they truly hold up.
Jeans are shown washed and dried.

Fit Summary
- Brand: Aritzia
- Style: Farrah Hi-Rise Jeans
- Size Tried: 24 Short
- Rise: 10 7/8″
- Inseam: 29″ before washing / 28″ after washing
- Fabric: 100% cotton rigid denim
- Petite Friendly: Short length available, but inseam may still run long for petites under 5’0″
Wear Test
I wore these jeans throughout a full day to see how they would hold their shape. Overall, they performed really well. There was a slight loosening with wear, but nothing dramatic or overly noticeable.
While the 100% cotton fabric likely helps them maintain their shape, I don’t think that’s the only factor. The thickness of the denim, fit at first, and overall construction seem to play a role as well.
For comparison, I recently tried the 100% cotton Rivette Jeans from LOFT, and those started slightly relaxed but bagged out so badly with wear I couldn’t wait to get home and take them off. These Aritzia jeans behaved very differently.
Wash Test
For the wash test, I washed the jeans in warm water and dried them on high heat, and they did shrink.
If you want to avoid shrinkage, I would recommend washing on cold and tumble drying on low (or hanging to dry) instead.
Since these jeans started with a 29″ inseam, which was slightly too long for me unless I wore heels, I was actually hoping they would shrink—and they did.
After washing, the inseam measured about 28 inches, and the rise shortened slightly as well. Importantly, the overall fit didn’t tighten in a noticeable way.
Measurements After Washing
- Rise: 10.5″
- Inseam: 28″
At 4’10”, a 29″ inseam was slightly long on me unless I wore heels. After washing, the jeans shrank to about 28″, which made them much easier for me to wear. If you typically look for 26–28″ inseams, this pair may work best after a wash or with hemming.
Final Impression
I ended up really loving these jeans, even though the 29″ inseam was a little long for me initially. Since that inseam appears in one of the smallest sizes, it’s possible the length increases as sizes go up.
If you’re comfortable wearing rigid, high-rise denim, this pair is a great option that holds its shape well throughout the day. However, if you prefer stretchy denim with more give, these probably won’t be the right fit for you.
Madewell Perfect Vintage Wide-Leg Jeans in Harvey Wash
The Perfect Vintage Wide-Leg Jeans from Madewell are one of my favorite denim styles, especially for petites. I’ve found that the fit and overall wear of these jeans can vary depending on the wash, so for this review I’m focusing specifically on the Harvey wash.

- Brand: Madewell
- Style: Perfect Vintage Wide Leg in Harvey Wash
- Size Tried: Petite 24
- Rise: 10 3/8″
- Inseam: 28″ before washing – length preserved with washing
- Fabric: 99% cotton/1% elastane
- Petite Friendly: 28″ inseam in petite with a relaxed fit
Wear Test
The Perfect Vintage Wide-Leg Jeans from Madewell are very comfortable to wear. The denim is a medium weight and feels well constructed. They’re made with 99% cotton and 1% elastane, which gives them just a touch of stretch without feeling rigid or tight.
On the first try, the fit felt slightly loose and relaxed on me. Because of that relaxed fit, I did notice the jeans loosen a bit more throughout the day, but importantly they did not lose their overall shape.
Since these jeans are 99% cotton, I’m planning to try shrinking them slightly in the wash to see how that affects the fit and wear. I’ll update this review once I’ve completed the wash test.
Wash Test
For the wash test, I washed the jeans in cold water and dried them on medium heat.
I noted shrinkage through the fit but not with the length, which I found interesting. They tightened up on me, so sticking with my true size was a good call. There were no noticeable changes in rise and inseam measurements.
Measurements After Washing
- Rise: 10 3/8″
- Inseam: 28″
Final Impressions
I’m always a fan of the Madewell Perfect Vintage Wide-Leg Jeans, and this pair is no exception. The denim feels comfortable and high quality, and the overall silhouette works well for petites.
That said, this Harvey wash has a more relaxed fit compared to the Pipestone wash that I shared frequently this winter, which fits a bit more structured on me.
The 28″ inseam works well for my height, but if you’re looking for something shorter, the cropped version of the Perfect Vintage Wide-Leg Jeans may be a better option. I’ll be reviewing that style next.
Madewell Perfect Vintage Wide Leg Crop Jeans in Midnight Wash
For the last two options I tried two different washes and lengths of the Perfect Vintage Wide Leg Crop Jeans. First, the standard length in Midnight Waters wash. This wash is said to be “comfort stretch” and has a fabric content of 96% Regenagri® certified cotton/3% elastomultiester (EME)/1% elastane. I wanted to try these jeans in the standard fit for the higher rise and 27″ inseam. This inseam is one that just grazes the top of my foot and shows a little less ankle. For some of you it may be a nice full-length.

Wear Test
This pair is one of the stretchiest options in this roundup, made with 96% cotton, 3% EME, and 1% spandex. I had to look up what EME was—it’s a fiber often used in stretch fabrics to help provide flexibility and recovery.
Overall, these jeans are very comfortable to wear. On the first try, the fit felt slightly relaxed—not quite as relaxed as the Harvey wash jeans, but also not a snug fit.
Throughout the day, I noticed a bit of loosening, mostly through the thigh area rather than the hips. Even with that mild stretch, the jeans held their overall shape well.
Wash Test
For the wash test, I washed the jeans in cold water and dried them on medium heat.
I did notice these jeans tightened slightly through the fit after washing. On the first try they felt a bit relaxed on me, but after the wash they were more snug. However, I didn’t notice any significant changes in the rise or inseam measurements.
Final Impressions
I really love this pair of jeans. They’re comfortable, flattering, and maintained their shape well, with only mild loosening throughout the day.
Even though they have a little bit of room on me, I stuck with my true size to help offset any potential shrinkage after washing.
The 27″ inseam in the standard length could be a great full-length option for petites, especially for those who struggle to find wide-leg jeans with inseams shorter than 28 inches.
I personally like the higher rise, but if you prefer something a bit lower, the petite version of these jeans may be a better option—I’ll be reviewing that pair next.
Madewell Perfect Vintage Wide Leg Crop Jeans in Vintage Canvas
IIn petite sizing, the Perfect Vintage Wide-Leg Crop Jeans from Madewell have a 10 3/8″ rise and a 25″ inseam. The petite version is better proportioned for me overall, especially through the rise and fit.
For this review, I chose the Vintage Canvas wash, which is a beautiful off-white shade. The fabric is 98% cotton and 2% elastane, giving it a little stretch while still feeling structured. I was also happy to find that they aren’t see-through at all, which can sometimes be a concern with lighter denim.
Now let’s see how they performed in the wear test.

Wear Test
Another comfortable pair of jeans from Madewell! These jeans have a bit of stretch while still feeling structured and supportive. Throughout the day, they held their shape well, and I didn’t notice any significant loosening with wear.
Wash Test
For the wash test, I washed the jeans in cold water and dried them on medium heat.
This pair shrunk both in overall fit and in length after washing. The raw, unsewn hem also rolled in the dryer. After washing, the jeans measured a 24″ inseam, while the rise remained about the same.
If I were doing it again, I would hang these jeans to dry. I prefer the original 25″ inseam, and air drying would likely help preserve both the length and the raw hem. You can always iron the hem to flatten it again, but hanging them to dry should help the jeans maintain their shape and last longer over time.
Final Impressions
The petite sizing in the Perfect Vintage Wide-Leg Crop Jeans feels better proportioned for me overall, particularly through the rise and fit. These jeans fit me well—not loose or overly relaxed—which may also contribute to how well they maintained their shape throughout the day.
I think they’re a great option, especially if you’re looking for white or off-white denim that isn’t see-through.
One thing to note is the raw hem, which is not sewn. With washing, the hem will likely continue to fray slightly over time, which has been my experience with similar raw-hem jeans. I suggest preserving the hem and fit by hanging these to dry.
So, What Jeans Hold Their Shape Best?
When I started this test, I assumed the answer would be simple: the more cotton in the fabric, the better the jeans would hold their shape. And while cotton content does seem to play an important role, the more I looked closely at each pair, the more I realized that fit and construction matter just as much.
The jeans that fit me well right from the start tended to hold their shape the best throughout the day. While none of these options completely bagged out, the pairs that felt a little loose initially ended up feeling slightly baggier by the end of the day.
So while higher cotton content can help, the initial fit and overall construction of the jeans seem to make a big difference as well.
I’ll be sure to come back and update this post after completing the wash tests so we can see how each pair performs after washing and drying.
