A capsule wardrobe is a great way to get a lot out of just a few pieces in your closet. I love creating petite-friendly capsules every season, but the fall capsules are usually my favorite. For my 2026 fall capsule, I put together 25 pieces—including shoes and accessories—that can be mixed into over 40+ different outfits.

The capsule is built around classic, wearable pieces in a coordinating color palette of olive, gold, brown and navy. I included a mix of jeans, pants, skirts, dresses, sweaters, knit layers, and shoes that work well different styles and for the changing temperatures of fall.

This post is the starting point for the capsule, where I’ll break down all 25 pieces and share more about the fit and sizing of each one. I’ll also be sharing the outfits from this capsule in a series of posts, by the bottoms, so you can see all of the outfits and details up close.

I chose the capsule pieces for their quality and fit, but if I’m able to find a less expensive and similar item, I will share it at the end of my review for each link. I will also share the fabric content of each piece and the bottoms’ fit measurements.

My Sizing: I’m 4’10”, and my bust, waist, and hip measurements are 32″, 24″, and 36″. My inseam is 25″ (the measurement from the inside of my leg to my ankle bone). The clothes shown are unaltered and show how they fit me right from the store. I list my sizing beside each item to help you compare when shopping online. When referencing my true size, that is often the smallest option available at a brand or petite xxs/00/24. I wear a size 5 shoe.

The 25-Piece Fall Capsule Wardrobe

Tops & Sweaters
Gray Cashmere Sweater XS Quince – Quince offers two styles of cashmere sweaters, and while I love both, I find the brushed cashmere version runs a little smaller and fits me better overall. I wear this sweater in XS, and the sleeves are petite-friendly enough that I can wear them uncuffed. The unbrushed version is a less expensive option. For a true budget cardigan for petites, I recommend this one from Old Navy. Fabric: 100% cashmere

Brown Marl Sweater Petite XS Gap – I love that Gap offers true petite sizing in their sweaters and chose two of them for the capsule. This overisized crewneck sweater from Gap has a slightly oversized fit but is still well proportioned for petites. The sleeves come right to my hands without extending past them. It’s thick, warm, and I love how easily it blends with the other pieces in the capsule. For a more budget-friendly option, try this similar sweater from Old Navy. Fabric: 100% Cotton

Striped Sweater XXS Madewell – This sweater is 100% cotton and well proportioned for petites. The cropped fit and striped colorway are what initially drew me to it. I’m wearing it in XXS, and although it has dropped shoulders, I find the overall fit works well on my frame. The sleeves are also a great length with no need to cuff them. Fabric: 100% Cotton

Ivory Sweater Petite XS Gap – Another Gap sweater with a great petite-friendly fit. I love the shorter V-neck style, which layers nicely over a T-shirt and can also be worn over a button-down. It’s true to size with a cropped length and sleeves that are a great length for petites. For a more budget-friendly option, try this similar style from Old Navy. Fabric: 100% Cotton

White T-Shirt Petite XS Old Navy – This white T-shirt is the best of the best. It’s a great combination of price and quality, and it layers so nicely under sweaters and sweatshirts thanks to the slightly higher neckline. The fabric is thick and not sheer, and it washes well without the collar becoming rumpled or losing its shape. I wear it in Petite XS and find it to be true to size. Fabric: 100% Cotton

Denim Top Small Target – I love including a denim top in my capsule wardrobes, and since you can find one at nearly every retailer, I chose a budget-friendly option from Target. The one I’m wearing has a shorter length, but you can easily swap it for a longer style if that better suits your proportions or preferences. I sized up to leave enough room for layering over sweaters. I also chose a denim shirt rather than a jacket because it’s more versatile—it can be worn open as a lightweight jacket or buttoned up and worn as a shirt. Fabric: 40% Cotton, 40% Lyocell, 20% Recycled Cotton

Oversized Oxford Top XS Quince – This Oxford shirt from Quince has an oversized, relaxed fit, so keep that in mind when choosing your size. If you prefer a closer fit, you may want to size down. The fabric is soft and doesn’t wrinkle as easily as traditional cotton poplin, making it an easy everyday option. I wash and dry mine as usual, and it has shrunk a little over time, so you may want to air dry it if you want to preserve the original fit. It also softens with each wash, which makes it even more comfortable over time. Fabric: 100% Cotton

Orange Top XXS Madewell – For those in-between days from late summer to fall, this top brings in fall colors while still being lightweight enough for warmer weather. I find it to be true to size and wear it in XXS. I initially needed to pin the chest for a little more coverage, but it shrank slightly after washing and I no longer needed the pin. If you want to preserve the original fit and sizing, I recommend hanging it to dry. Fabric: 55% cotton/45% viscose

Bottoms
Ecru Jeans 24 Classic Madewell – I chose the Perfect Vintage Cropped Jeans in Vintage Canvas for the capsule. I went with a cropped style because the shorter inseam can work well for a range of petite heights and proportions. In petite sizing, the jeans have a 25″ inseam and a 10 3/8″ rise, while the classic sizing has a 27″ inseam and a 10 3/4″ rise. I’m wearing the classic sizing in this post. The denim is a medium weight with a little bit of stretch, and the light color isn’t see-through. Overall, I find them to be true to size. One thing to keep in mind is the raw hem can unravel with repeated washing and drying, so I recommend hanging them to dry if you want to preserve the hem. Fabric: 98% cotton/2% elastane

Dark Wash Jeans Petite 24 J.Crew Factory – I considered a few different options for the dark wash jeans in this capsule, including the Bella Wide Leg, Bella Relaxed Straight, and Madewell Perfect Vintage Wide Leg Jeans. I ultimately chose this classic wide-leg pair from J.Crew Factory because I preferred the overall fit. They’re a new-to-me style, while the others are styles I’ve worn for the last year or so. I’ll have another post coming soon with a more detailed fit comparison of all of these options. In petite sizing, the J.Crew Factory jeans have a 10.5″ rise and a 28″ inseam. They fit me well through the hips and tops of my thighs before opening into a fairly generous wide leg. If you need a shorter inseam, the Bella Relaxed Straight Jeans from Quince are available with a 26″ inseam and could easily be swapped into any of these outfits. Fabric: 85% cotton/14% polyester/1% elastane

Olive Corduroy Pants Petite 24 Banana Republic Factory – I tried several styles of corduroy pants for this capsule and ultimately landed on this pair from Banana Republic Factory as my favorite. I’ll have an upcoming post reviewing the other styles I tried as well, so there will be a few options to consider if this pair isn’t quite right for you. I find these pants to be true to size with a soft, medium-weight corduroy. I especially appreciate the fit through the hips—they don’t feel tight or restrictive on me. If you’re petite with a curvier shape, these offer a comfortable fit. They have a high 10″ rise and a 27.5″ inseam in petite. Fabric: 96% cotton, 4% elastane spandex

Brown Corduroy Skirt 25 Gap Factory – I found this skirt at Gap Factory and thought it looked a little snug on the model, so I decided to size up—and I’m glad I did. One size up gives me a comfortable fit with enough room to tuck in tops and layer sweaters without the waist feeling too tight. It’s currently sold out at Gap Factory, but this option from Banana Republic has a similar look. Fabric: 98% Cotton, 2% Spandex

Dresses
Navy Corduroy Dress 00 J.Crew – This dress is a comfortable, versatile style that works especially well in a capsule wardrobe. It comes in petite sizing, but I’m wearing the classic sizing for a little extra length. In my true size, 00, it has a comfortably roomy fit, so if you prefer a closer fit, you may want to size down. It also has a full front zipper, which allows you to adjust the neckline to your preference. The dress is unlined but not sheer. Fabric: 100% cotton

Jackets & Layers
Olive Quilted Jacket Petite XXS Ann Taylor – I chose a classic quilted barn jacket from Ann Taylor for the capsule. I’m wearing my true size, Petite XXS, but I find the jacket runs large overall. It has a roomy fit, and even in petite sizing, the sleeves are long enough on me that I need to cuff them. If you prefer a closer fit and are able to size down, you may want to do so. However, the extra room works well for layering over sweaters as the weather cools. This is a lightweight jacket, so it’s best suited for mild fall weather rather than colder days.

Field Jacket XXS Madewell – The Billie Short Jacket from Madewell has a cropped, swing fit that works well for petites, even though it comes in standard sizing. I’m wearing XXS and find it to be true to size, with enough room to comfortably layer a sweater underneath. It has a corduroy collar and cuffs, and the sleeves are designed to be worn cuffed, which makes the length especially petite-friendly. The jacket is lightly lined, making it a great lightweight layer for fall.
