For weeks I’ve been dreaming of fall temps. It’s been hot and humid, and I’ve been complaining. However, this week, we got those fall temps, and I forgot just how cold it gets…it’s only the beginning. I’m currently sitting at my desk, with slippers and layers because it’s pretty much an ice box in my house. Steven isn’t going to be down with me turning on the heat right about now so the sweater layers will have to do. Which brings me to the point of this post – those fall/winter basics; sweaters, boots and scarves, where are my favorite places to buy them?

1. Basic layering tops – My requirements when it comes to a basic layering piece is, quality, price, fit, and the ability to wash well. Since they’re pretty basic, there isn’t a whole lot to picking them out, but you would be surprised how many basics I’ve purchased over the years that have just been a waste of money. I’m also not going to deal with a basic layering top that needs to be hung dry to last, if it’s basic, it better withstand a normal wash and dry cycle. I’ll quit rambling – my current favorite with their ponte knit is Old Navy. I never liked Old Navy’s knit tops in the past, they were cheap and didn’t last, but this ponte knit is different. It’s thick and washes well. I have been a fan of the flare sleeve tops. Despite the bell sleeve, they still layer well under cardigans and jackets, and look pretty cute with vests too. I also love to buy basic tees at Target, Loft and get this – Sam’s Club. The Eddie Bauer tees that they sell at Sam’s Club are a comfortable fit and they wash well…and they’re cheap. Win.

2. Sweaters and Jackets – Sweaters and jackets always require a little maintenance if you want to keep them looking nice through washes. I always wash and lay my sweaters out flat to dry, some even require dry cleaning, which means Dryel to me. However, sweaters are not created equal and I’ve found some of the best will last through many seasons. I’ve had the most luck with sweaters and outerwear from Loft, J. Crew (not factory) and Banana Republic. Banana Republic has been one of the best for me – the sweaters and really any type of outwear I’ve picked up from there has lasted and still looks great years later. Totally worth the investment.

3. Boots – Most leather boots are going to last you no matter where you buy them from. So I’m sharing my favorite place to buy shoes instead. Nordstrom not only carries my size, they have the BEST customer service. Their shipping is fast, returns are easy, and they offer in stock (or even curbside) pick-up. By far my favorite!

4. Scarves & Accessories – I’m a cheap girl when it comes to accessories. My favorite places to pick them up are Target, Old Navy and H&M. I have a leopard scarf I purchased from H&M a few years ago for like $5-$10, if I remember right, that is identical to this one. Half the price!
