Cotton midi and maxi skirts are everywhere this season—especially in all white. While this fuller silhouette can be tricky on a petite frame, there are ways to make it work.

If you’ve been wanting to try the trend, I’ve rounded up three options that I love the fit of: one more polished, one slightly shorter, and one with a relaxed boho maxi feel.

I’m sharing how each one fits on my petite frame, without any alterations, so you can see which might work best for you.

Cotton Midi & Maxi Skirts for Petites: 3 Styles Compared

My Sizing: I’m 4’10”, and my bust, waist, and hip measurements are 32″, 24″, and 36″. My inseam is 25″ (the measurement from the inside of my leg to my ankle bone). The clothes shown are unaltered and show how they fit me right from the store. I list my sizing beside each item to help you compare when shopping online. When referencing my true size, that is often the smallest option available at a brand or petite xxs/00/24. I wear a size 5 shoe.

The Three Styles I Tried

Starting from shortest to longest:

  • J.Crew: An unlined option and the shortest of the three. Because it isn’t lined, it can be a bit sheer unless you add a slip.
  • Ann Taylor: A fully lined, more polished option. I love the shape of this skirt and the added coverage from the lining. It does run large, so I recommend sizing down.
  • Abercrombie: A fully lined pull-on maxi style. This one is 100% cotton, but it has a softer, less structured feel compared to the other two.

Interestingly, when you look at all of the skirts side by side, I think the longest option is the one that makes me look the tallest.

How to Style a Midi & Maxi A-Line Skirt as a Petite

If you want to try this trend on a petite frame, it’s all about balance.

I recommend pairing these skirts with a slim-fitting top—either tucked in or cropped—to define your shape. Look for a high-rise skirt that sits at your natural waist rather than lower on the hips.

For shoes, keep things light and minimal. I paired mine with ballet flats, but thin-strap sandals work just as well.

J.Crew Pull-On Midi Skirt

The Pull-On Midi Skirt from J.Crew is the shortest option I’m sharing. It’s made from 100% cotton poplin, giving it a more structured feel.

This skirt is unlined. The fabric isn’t overly sheer, but it can be slightly see-through, so that’s something to keep in mind. It’s designed to be worn mid-rise, but I pulled mine up to sit high on my waist, which works better for my frame, but it can also be worn lower. The waistband is stretchy.

Overall, it’s well proportioned for petites and runs true to size. Since it’s cotton poplin, you can expect some wrinkling with both wear and washing.

Ann Taylor Full Midi Skirt

The Full Midi Skirt from Ann Taylor has a similarly polished look and is slightly longer than the J.Crew option. Unlike the pull-on style, this one features a zipper closure in the back.

It’s also made from cotton poplin, giving it a structured feel, and it’s fully lined. Between the two, this one feels more substantial, and I really love the length.

It does run large, so I recommend sizing down for the best fit. I’m wearing it in Petite 00, and it’s still a bit roomy at the waist. I tried to shrink it in the wash without much luck.

Abercrombie Boho Maxi Skirt

If I’m picking a favorite, this is it. The boho maxi skirt from Abercrombie is 100% cotton and fully lined, with a comfortable stretch waistband.

I’m wearing it in Petite XXS, and I’d consider it true to size. What I love most about this one is the length and the feel of the fabric. It’s softer and less structured than the poplin options, so while it may wrinkle with wear, it doesn’t crease in the same way.

Cotton midi and maxi skirts can feel a little tricky on a petite frame, but the right fit and proportions make all the difference. Whether you prefer a more structured, polished look or something softer and more relaxed, there’s an option here that can work without alterations. For me, it comes down to choosing a high-rise fit, keeping the volume balanced with a slim top, and pairing with lightweight shoes. If you’ve been wanting to try this trend, these three styles are a great place to start.
