My kids went back to school this week, which always makes me mentally shift to fall. Even though it’s mid-August, hot and humid, I’m dreaming of the crisp fall days ahead. In today’s post, I’ve rounded up four petite-friendly dresses in autumnal colors that will keep you cool in the late summer heat when you’re dreaming of fall.

Petite-Friendly Fall Transition Dresses
My Sizing: I’m 4’10”, and my bust, waist, and hip measurements are 32″, 24″, and 36″. My inseam is 25″ (the measurement from the inside of my leg to my ankle bone). The clothes shown are unaltered and show how they fit me right from the store. I list my sizing beside each item to help you compare when shopping online. When referencing my true size, that is often the smallest option available at a brand or petite xxs/00/24. I wear a size 5 shoe.
Avara Estella Dress
I love the clothes at Avara. They’re colorful, full of details, and while I don’t always find a perfect fit there, I’m excited when I find pieces that work for me. The Estella Dress is a beautiful burgundy fit and flare with a smocked top and fully functional buttons. The skirt is fully lined and it’s well fitted at the arm openings. This dress runs a little snug at the waist, so if you’re in between sizes, I recommend a size up. I’m wearing the dress in XS for reference. I think this dress would be pretty in fall family photos. I love it worn with heels, but it also looks great with flats and sandals. As it cools down I would pair it with a cropped cardigan or jacket.
Avara Tilley Dress
Another winning Avara find! The Tilley dress is an above-the-knee option for petites. It has a side zipper closure and functional buttons at the chest. It doesn’t have any stretch, but in XS, there is a little bit of extra room on me at the waist. I would call it true to size in XS if you use my sizing as a reference, but the Avara site notes it runs small through the top. This is probably to my benefit since I’m small-chested, so if you’re busty, I would go with their recommendation to size up.
Baltic Born Joanie Dress
The Joanie Dress from Baltic Born is a maxi-length dress for petites. This option is one I need to wear heels with, or hem to wear with flats. I first included this dress in a post last year with outfit ideas for fall family photos. I still stand behind that recommendation with the beautiful fall print and flowing skirt on this dress. The dress has a smocked top, flutter sleeves, and a fully lined skirt with pockets. I’m wearing it in XS.
Time and Tru Smocked Dress
This under $30 dress from Walmart is a maxi option in a beautiful fall print. Although it’s not quite the midi length you see on the model, I love this dress. It’s roomy on me in XS, giving it a comfortable, relaxed fit. The top is smocked, and the arm openings fit well, no gaping! It’s unlined, but not sheer.
