Graduation season is here, and if you’ve got one on your calendar, you might be wondering what to wear as a guest.

Most ceremonies fall somewhere between casual and dressy, which can make outfit planning a little tricky. You want to look put together, but still feel comfortable—especially if you’ll be sitting outside or walking around campus.

Today I’m sharing two petite-friendly dress options: one a little more dressed up and one more casual, so you have an easy starting point depending on the dress code.

What to Wear to a Graduation as a Guest (Petite-Friendly Outfit Ideas)

My Sizing: I’m 4’10”, and my bust, waist, and hip measurements are 32″, 24″, and 36″. My inseam is 25″ (the measurement from the inside of my leg to my ankle bone). The clothes shown are unaltered and show how they fit me right from the store. I list my sizing beside each item to help you compare when shopping online. When referencing my true size, that is often the smallest option available at a brand or petite xxs/00/24. I wear a size 5 shoe.

What to Consider When Choosing a Graduation Guest Outfit

Before we get into the outfits, here are a few things I always keep in mind:

  • Comfort is key: You may be sitting for long periods or walking across grass or pavement
  • Check the setting: Outdoor ceremonies call for breathable fabrics and practical shoes
  • Keep it polished but relaxed: Think dressy casual over formal in most cases

Dressed-Up Option – Ann Taylor Petite Belted Crew Neck Flare Dress

When it comes to polished, petite-friendly dresses, Ann Taylor is always a great place to check. They also carry petite sizes in store, which makes it one of the few places you can try pieces on before buying.

The dress I chose for this post is a fit-and-flare style with a belted waist. I love the length, neckline, and overall fit—it feels really well proportioned for petites. It’s fully lined, and instead of a fabric tie belt, it has a buckle, which gives it a more elevated look.

The dress fits true to size and works well all around, including at the arm openings. I’m wearing it in Petite 00.

I chose low heels for this outfit but if you’ll be doing a lot of walking or will be outdoors, you could swap in metallic sandals or ballet flats.

Casual Option – J.Crew Factory Cotton Midi Dress

Our local high school holds its graduation in the football stadium—so there’s lots of walking, grass, and sunshine. This outfit would be perfect for that kind of setting.

The dress is 100% cotton, making it breathable for warm weather, and it’s long enough that you don’t have to worry about hot bleachers. I paired it with flat sandals you can comfortably walk in.

It fits true to size—I’m wearing it in Petite XXS. It comes with a tie belt, but I prefer it without for a more relaxed look. The dress is unlined, but not sheer.

Graduation outfits don’t need to be complicated—just something comfortable, polished, and appropriate for the setting. Whether you go with a more dressed-up option or keep it casual, focusing on fit and proportion will make all the difference for a petite frame. Both of these dresses are easy to wear, versatile, and great options you can reach for again beyond graduation day.
