A trench coat has been on my list of spring staples for years. It’s a classic, timeless piece that instantly elevates any outfit. I originally planned to title this post “petite-friendly trench coats,” but one of the coats I’m sharing isn’t truly petite-friendly. Instead, I’ve grouped them by style—a classic trench, a cropped option, and an oversized version—so you can decide which silhouette works best for you.

My Sizing: I’m 4’10”, and my bust, waist, and hip measurements are 32″, 24″, and 36″. My inseam is 25″ (the measurement from the inside of my leg to my ankle bone). The clothes shown are unaltered and show how they fit me right from the store. I list my sizing beside each item to help you compare when shopping online. When referencing my true size, that is often the smallest option available at a brand or petite xxs/00/24. I wear a size 5 shoe.

Classic Trench Coat

I’ll start with my favorite—the Icon Trench Coat from J.Crew. It’s a classic, knee-length trench that I reach for year after year. Whether the internet decides this style is “outdated” or not, it’s one I’ll always love. It’s timeless, not trendy, and especially well-proportioned for someone who is petite.

I continue to choose the Icon Trench because it’s the best I’ve tried in terms of overall quality and fit. It is on the pricier side, but it does go on sale occasionally. Since this style has been around for a few years, I wouldn’t be surprised to see it discounted more often this year.

The coat is water-resistant and has a removable hood. It runs slim, particularly through the arms and shoulders. I’m wearing my true size, and it has stretched slightly over time. That said, I do have broader shoulders and still find it comfortable—but if you plan to layer heavily or prefer a bit more room, sizing up may be worth considering.

Oversized

Oversized, drapey trench coats are very on-trend this season. I picked up the Oversized Trench Coat from Oak + Fort after seeing it styled on other petite creators and loving how it looked on them. While I really like the drape of the fabric and the overall feel of the coat, it is very oversized—truly living up to its name.

If you’re specifically looking for an oversized fit, you can make it work by pushing the sleeves back and tying the belt at the back to slightly define the waist. That said, given just how large this coat runs, you may be better off opting for a more affordable oversized trench—possibly this option from Quince—and using the same styling tricks to achieve a similar look. The Quince coat has crepe fabric, which will drape and would more than likely fit better than this one. Adding it to my list to put it to the test.

Cropped Trench

I’ve shared the cropped Esquire Trench Coat from Aritzia a few times here and really love it, but the sleeves run a bit long on me. For this post, I opted to share this cropped swing-style jacket from J.Crew Factory instead.

It’s not a traditional trench—this one has a sleek swing silhouette—and the fit is spot on for me. The sleeves are a perfect length with no need to cuff, and I love where it hits overall. It comes in classic tan as well as navy. I’m wearing it here in Petite XXS.

Whether you’re drawn to a classic trench, a cropped style, or something more oversized and trendy, there’s a spring option out there that can work for you. It really comes down to fit, proportions, and how you actually plan to wear it day to day. A good trench is one of those pieces you’ll keep reaching for year after year, and once you find the right one, it just makes getting dressed easier. I’ve linked everything I shared above so you can check them out and see which style feels like the best fit for your wardrobe.
